Sempre Music Studio

It’s been a little quiet over here, but Sempre Music Studio has been busy! In person lessons started in September and it’s been so good seeing students again. Some lessons have remained virtual too. I’m just thankful to keep teaching music in any capacity during the last year. I’ve gotten to teach individual lessons, coach high school orchestra students, and facilitate creative youth development classes! Thank you to those who have recommended me to families and programs this past year. Without your support, I’d be a very lonely music educator! This week, I found out that my students’ dog Chloe passed away. My student (the brother) told me during our online lesson and showed me the sweet momentos him and his sister had on a table in Chloe’s honor. We spent about 15 minutes of the lesson just reminiscing about Chloe and her antics. I showed him some pictures of Chloe on my phone from over a year ago too. After that, he played a few of his favorite violin songs and I told him thank you for talking to me about Chloe.... She was a good dog and I’ll miss her too. He said, you’re welcome. I’m really glad we took the time and space to share, instead of rushing through the lesson without acknowledging the loss and the feelings that come with it. She was a loving, sweet ol’ lady who used to greet me every time I taught at my students’ house. In her old age she would attempt to keep up with the younger pup in the house, Abby, but then she would sigh and go lay down instead. She was also a lover of most foods and tried to rummage through my bag for snacks a few times. This post goes out to Chloe and to my students who loved her very much. Sempre Music Studio is still here! 2021 has been very busy so far with online private lessons, elementary school presentations, and older youth creative classes. I am constantly inspired by the students I teach each day. More posts to come! For now, I wanted to share one of the most exciting experiences I have as a music educator: When students compose or create their own music ... I feel so appreciative that students trust me to help them compose. I think it’s so important to support and encourage students to express themselves through their music. I facilitated a class of high school youth who explored soundscapes, improvisation, and ways of expressing themselves amidst a life-altering pandemic. I learned so much from the experience and was humbled by what students created. Here is an excerpt of a student’s composition that is a result of that exploration. It’s titled Corona Mortis.
