Funny Moments this week: This week we were singing a song by Raffie, There was a little baby, oh my Lord, there was a little baby, Oh my Lord. When the song was over, one little girl had a concerned look on her face and told me we were singing a bad word, and she whispered Lord while cupping her hands. I overheard two children talking this week. ... One little girl asked her friend if he listens to thunder at his house? He responded, No, there’s not much thunder at my house. She told him, Oh, you should come to my house and listen to thunder, or ride in my dad's car." She was chatting about the song ‘Thunder’ by Imagine Dragons; he was discussing the weather. I reminded one of the children this week not to blow into his classmate's face and supported my position with a ‘germs’ talk. He countered, But the wind from my mouth smells nice. Have a good Christmas Break!! See more

Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving break. Here are some funny moments from before break. Yes, we have been in class for almost four months, but there still seems to be some classmate confusion concerning two girls who share the same name. One little boy said this to the girls standing together, I don’t know which one is you. They responded, laughing, I’m a Thea, and she’s a Thea.... This week we played a game of Thanksgiving BINGO. Each picture represented an element of Thanksgiving both past and present. As I called out the images, I added a description of it’s relevance to the holiday. One of the items was a football. Before I had gotten to that picture, one little boy asked, Why is there a football? His friend quickly answered, pointing to the Native American, Because these guys taught the pilgrims how to toss. This week we read The Night Before Thanksgiving. It’s a silly rhyming book that walks through a fun family filled Thanksgiving. One of the last pages reads with a bit more serious tone, We all took our places, the food smelled so great, We started to dig in, but Dad said to wait. We’re thankful that everyone is together this year, In our home, and our hearts, where we hold you so dear. One very rowdy boy bowed his head for a quick moment, and somberly added an Amen. See more

Week 13: This week one little boy was fully absorbed in his work when a classmate disrupted the activity. He was upset, and responded in a very serious tone, You really are the Grinch! I received this compliment at lunch this week: MMM these noodles are the best! They don’t taste like anything.

Funny Moments Week 8: Morning prayer, Dear Jesus, Please help this day to get better and better and sorry I forgot to wear underwear. This week one little girl was finished painting on the easel and asked me to cut off her painting. ... It was very messy, but she reassured me she followed the lesson (the set of sequential pictures to help guide) as she pointed to the picture sequence diagram of a pumpkin on a vine. Yes, her picture variation was a loose interpretation of the lesson, but she helped me along by explaining, See, it’s my momin the shape of a pumpkin! See more

Funny Moments Week 6: This week a little girl asked me, Did you know I caught a tattle-tail once with a net? (tadpole) One day I had a suspicion that someone in our class needed to use the bathroom. When I asked the question, one little boy quickly admitted he needed to go potty. ... I assumed he would be in there for a while, but it seemed to be an unusually quick trip. When he came into class, I asked if he remembered to flush and wash, and he told me YES. One of his classmates suggested I smell his hands to make sure he was telling the truth See more

Funny Moments Week 5: This week a little girl told me one of her classmates said a bad word. The little boy overheard her and said, NoI didn’t say butt. He then asked me, Have you heard this before? He recited this rhyme. Gene Gene made a machine.... Joe Joe made it go. Art Art let a fart and blew it all apart. Rhyming words seems to be one of his academic strengths this year. The teeter-totter is a very popular playground activity. The long line allows the children to practice their counting skills to 30 while waiting for a turn. This week, when the turn was almost over, one of the girls that still on the equipment began shouting, Wait, wait, wait I have a great idea! How about everyone takes a turn with ME? See more

Funny Moments Week 4: Going to school opens new experiences for children as they become more aware of their surroundings. For one three-year-old student, it opened a whole new, unfamiliar world of flip sequins, glitter, and unicorns. As I was observing the children at work, I noticed the little boy cruising around the classroom in a pair of glittery unicorn slip-ons.... He spotted the impressive set of shoes, so he quickly and casually slid them on and sparkled his way to his next activity. See more

Funny Moments Week 3: Traditional Montessori classrooms incorporate a mixed age range of children, which allows each child many opportunities to function as both teacher and student. But you know some fresh adult instruction is necessary when an older brother keeps chiming in his younger, four-year-old brother’s ear, using his full name, as if addressing his unruly child. Charles, you are not allowed to use scissors. Charles put the scissors down. Charles put the glue sti...ck down put it down. It took a moment of teacher redirection, but soon the older brother was off to his own tasks, realizing Charlie had received lessons on using scissors and glue and was being very responsible with the items This week, I saw one of the children hugging the fish tank but smacking the sides of the tank while doing so. I reminded him that we need to be respectful of the fish and hitting the tank scares them. He replied, Oh, I’m just telling ‘em I’m back. See more

Funny Moments Week 2: This week I was giving a lesson on the sandpaper letters to one of the children. I chose letters of contrast in both shape and sound for the presentation. At the end of the lesson, the little girl said to me, Let me tell you something, those letters are not in the order that we sing them. As part of our grace and courtesy focus, the children received a lesson on the book,’The Peace Rose’. It is a book written to help teach children conflict resoluti...on in the classroom by taking turns expressing their thoughts and feelings. In class, a child can take the rose and offer it to a child to work out conflict. One little boy approached his brother and handed him the rose. He said, I’m sorry I took your toys? His little brother was a bit confused since it didn’t happen at school, but was excited about the confession and announced to his classmates, with a surprised tone, Guyshe’s ‘pologizing! See more

I loved these preschooler perspectives from our first week together: A little girl working on a numbers - 6 and 9 are like sistersthey look alike! A little girl noticed the shoe-tying activity in our classroom - I can’t tie shoes, but I can tie my robe! A little boy on the double tricycle and sees the teacher standing post on playground duty - Wanna ride?

Funny Moments Week 28: St. Patrick’s Day was on Tuesday. I had been so focused on all of the updates and regulations regarding COVID-19 I forgot to wear green. I was reminded of the quirky holiday when I received a pinch by one little boy the minute he saw me. It made me laugh. Who would have thought a pinch would be so refreshing - it reminded me of simpler things. ... We have a new handwashing diagram in the bathroom to remind the students of all of the essential steps involved in the process. I am not sure the 9 step picture series is necessary, as most of them enjoy the sink and bubbles and are very thorough, but we added it as an extra precaution. I sent one little boy to the bathroom to wash his face. He took a really long time, and when he came out, he had the same smudge across his face. He told me he forgot a step in handwashing, so he had to start over (as if there was going to be a test on it). I reminded him he was in there to wash his face; he laughed and went back for a second try. See more
