The San Diego community has been instrumental in helping the San Diego Food Bank meet the growing need for emergency food services here at home, including small businesses like Max Depth Apparel. The clothing company owned by Nick Gomez, a US Navy Diver, hosted a fundraiser to support the Food Bank donating all net proceeds from sales of his apparel items from April to June to our COVID-19 Response Fund. The Food Bank feeds nearly 600,000 people a month through a network of over 500 nonprofit partners throughout the county. The Food Bank is able to serve the amount of people we do with support from many businesses, organizations and individuals. Last month, Northwestern Mutual matched donations dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000 for our COVID-19 Hunger-Relief Response Programs. Congratulations to our CEO, James Floros, for being awarded the 2020 Nonprofit CEO of the Year Award presented by the San Diego Business Journal. Under Jim’s leadership, the San Diego Food Bank and our North County Food Bank chapter quickly mobilized to meet the soaring demand for food assistance when the COVID-19 pandemic reached San Diego County. Since mid-March, the Food Bank has distributed more than 30 million pounds of food, and we are currently feeding nearly 600,000 people every month.
