Educators and caregivers know self-care is paramount to their superpowers. Born with the gift of giving and helping the children of our future, when our emotio...nal tank is empty we default to our"reptile" part of our brain which fights, flights or freezes in the presence of our students. This looks like punishment, bribes, threats, exclusionary practices, raising a voice or a discerning look. When we react versus respond, it comes from our empty tank as we have not a thread of energy reserves left. Defaulting to our reaction (reptile) brain is harmful to kids over time and does not grow human(E) beings. So the superpower is enhanced with self-care and becomes diminished (kryptonite) when we are depleted. But how do we do that during these times of individual and collective stress and trauma? I would love to hear the collective wisdom. What is one thing you do to restore your emotional reserves outside of work? A child's dysregulated and challenging behavior ALWAYS is communicating a story. We need to move from punishing, shaming, yelling, threatening to co-regulating... and teaching. Children have an immature brain and sensory response system until around 25 years old. Look behind the challenging behavior in the moment to what the behavior might be communicating they need. This attunement will grow Human(E) Beings rather than disconnected beings. See more
