June is Aphasia Awareness month! According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), at least 1 million people in the United States are living with aphasia, and nearly 180,000 Americans acquire it each year. They have provided a great article about what aphasia is and how it is a condition that commonly affects individuals with brain injury. To read it click the link below: https://www.biausa.org/public-affairs/media/what-is-aphasia... Thank you BIAA for providing such valuable information! #braininjuryawareness #braininjury #SDBIFfamily

WOW!!! Last quarter SDBIF was sent a check from Amazon Smile for $128.57!! That was at no cost to all of you who simply bought products through smile.amazon.com website. It is a simple process, whenever you want purchase something from Amazon, make sure you go to the smile.amazon.com website first. There is no difference to what is for sale...it just sends a portion of your purchase price as a donation to SDBIF (as long as you choose San Diego Brain Injury Foundation as your charity of choice) at no cost to you. smile.amazon.com/ch/33-0072774

For today’s #TBITuesday, SDBIF would like to feature San Diego’s Bryan Devore! He has worked with SDBIF since 2018 in many different waysas an exhibitor at surviveHEADSTRONG and even providing hands-on assistance with survivors and their families by providing help with home organization and relocation. One such example was from a few years ago, when Bryan helped out one of our survivors and his family by helping them sell their home and relocate. Unfortunately, the home ha...d fallen into disrepair and the task of going through everything in the home was overwhelming. His siblings weren't sure where to turn for help so they contacted Bryan. Bryan met with the family, explained how he could help them sell the home as-is quickly and easily without having to make repairs, and told them about how Silver Linings Transitions would help the survivor with all of the sorting and packing. In a short amount of time the survivor was living in a new apartment, the home was sold, and the family was able to move on to the next chapter of their lives. We are thankful there are people like Bryan and services available in San Diego to assist our community. If you would like to learn more about the ways Bryan has helped so many, please visit his Facebook pages for Devore Realty Group - DRE 01397835 and Silver Linings Transitions Move Managers. Help us thank him for his dedication and contributions to the San Diego brain injury community! #braininjury #braininjurysurvivor #SDBIFfamily

DID YOU KNOW? The term Aphasia is defined as the "Loss of the ability to express oneself and/or to understand language." This is caused by damage to brain cells rather than deficits in speech or hearing organs. It can occur suddenly after a stroke or head injury, or develop slowly from a growing brain tumor or disease. Aphasia can come in many different forms such as: APHASIA EXPRESSIVE: The inability to find or formulate the words to express oneself even though knowing wha...t one wants to say. APHASIA FLUENT: Characterized by spontaneous use of language at normal speed that conveys little meaning. APHASIA GLOBAL: Severely limited residual ability to communicate with others. Includes both expressive and receptive aphasia. APHASIA NON-FLUENT: Characterized by awkward articulation, limited vocabulary, hesitant, slow speech output, restricted use of grammatical forms and a relative preservation of auditory comprehension. APHASIA RECEPTIVE: Problems in understanding what others attempt to communicate. - If you want to see the other glossary posts, do a search on our Facebook page for #TBIglossary and the other posts will pop up with more terminology to learn. But keep coming back to the SDBIF page to learn more about brain injury and brain injury recovery! #BrainInjuryResources | #SDBIFfamily | #BrainInjuryCommunity | #EmbraceTheNewYou |#JourneyToRecovery | #AchieveMoreTogether | #DidYouKnow | #BrainInjuryTerms

We came across a great "article" from the Air Force Center of Excellence for Medical Multimedia (CEMM Library) about how to tell your children about TBI. May times, children have a hard time understanding why someone is different after a TBIand this gives some suggestions on how to approach this subject. Read the "article on the SDBIF website, here: https://sdbif.org/index/how-to-tell-children-about-tbi/ This "article" is actually Chapter Four taken from their online resourc...e "The Caregiver's Journey". The other Chapters discuss many other topics, which we highly suggest you read at your leisure. The link to this online book, is also on the SDBIF website at the bottom of the article. We hope you find this useful! #DidYouKnow | #CurrentEvents | #BrainInjuryNews | #BrainInjuryResources | #BrainInjurySurvivors | #BrainInjuryCommunity | #EmbraceTheNewYou | #AchieveMoreTogether
