On Champgane Day I thought I’d share the WHY behind our green bottles! We all know a little oxygen is good for wine right? That’s why we decant wine - to allow aromas to bloom. But too much oxygen and you’ve got a spoiled wine, or cooking vinegar - called light-strike . Wine naturally has antioxidants to prevent said dreaded oxidation - but exposure to light/uv rays will break down those tannins and antioxidants, so they can’t do their job. Tinted glass blocks those UV... rays and light from breaking down the good protective stuff, thus allowing them to protect the wine as it ages. (Same premise for tinted beer bottles by the way) Green bottles have become tradition (cheapest to make en masse), but you see amber and other colors too. HINT: If you find wine in a colorless bottle as most whites are chances are it’s one that is meant to be drunk now, as opposed to stored and aged. HINT: all those beautiful store displays of clear glass bottles of rosé, sparkling and white wine have a higher potential of being faulty. The most frequent cases of light strike have been observed in sparkling wines. For this reason, the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championship (CSWWC ) is encouraging sparkling wine producers to restrict the usage of clear bottles. Here are some tips on what you can do to increase the likeliness of NOT getting a faulty wine: Avoid bottles stored directly under light or displayed in the window Opt for wines in green-colored (better) or amber-colored (best) bottles Go for sparkling wines wrapped in gold colored plastic (if bottle is clear) Yet another reason to buy wine by the case and from S&C where you know its been protected from field to you.
