Today marks the end of California's 2020 Week of the School Administrator. #SEAC salutes all of our site and district administrators in #K12Education #SchoolDistricts and #CommunityColleges. Thank you for your commitment and hard work every day, and especially in these trying times.

A deep dive into the politics of #COVID-19 in #K12Education. "Contrary to the conventional understanding of school districts as localized and nonpartisan actors, we find evidence that politics, far more than science, shaped school district decision-making. Mass partisanship and teacher union strength best explain how school boards approached reopening." If you can't devote the time to read this study, #Superintendents and members of #SchoolBoards should click on the paper below and go to page 30 for the conclusions. Depending on what you are experiencing, these may or may not be a surprise.

California #K12education and #CommunityColleges budgets are dependent of federal assistance this year. @DaarelBurnette wrote: "California lawmakers, in fact, wrote a second federal relief package into their now-enacted state budget. (It may now have to be revised)." He describes consequences such as using reserves, mid-year cuts, and enrollment competition as consequences in this sobering piece. #Superintendents and #SchoolBoards may be faced with terrible choices if a package does not come together soon. California's budget plan for #K12Education and #CommunityColleges depends on federal assistance. Without it, deferrals become cuts. Now is the time for #Superintendents and #SchoolBoards to prepare internal and external communities for the impact of this outcome, should it come to pass. #SEAC

"The good news is not without its caveats." "Our forecast assumes either widespread availability and usage of an effective vaccine in early 2021 or that the pandemic's impact on economic activity abates and is relatively mild in 2021 and 2022," Leo Feler and Jerry Nickelsburg write. "It also assumes another, more limited round of fiscal stimulus before the end of the year. None of these assumptions is assured, and if they do not come to pass, our forecast is too optimistic." And be sure to read through to the CA specific analysis: "...full recovery will not occur before the end of 2022." This signals that potentially difficult fiscal decisions for #SchoolDistricts, #CommunityColleges, #Superintendents and #SchoolBoards could be coming as early as this spring. #SEAC

Here are six ways to support your principals during the #Covid19 crisis. The article focuses on large #SchoolDistricts but the 6 ways are important for #Superintendents and #HumanResources administrators in any size district. You've got this covered, but it's an important reminder. We think number 5 is critical. Click on the story below. #SEAC

#Superintendents and #HumanResources administrators in #PublicEducation probably don't need a study to confirm this, but California's position relative to other states may surprise you. Conditions in California don't allow you to make up the gap, but it is important to recognize that #K12Education is hobbled by these realities. Click on the apple to see the study. #SEAC

This is the work #SchoolDistricts and #CommunityColleges do every day. #SEAC

Here's a microcosmic look at what may be happening across California's #SchoolDistricts. #SEAC believes it's never too early for #Superintendents and #HumanResources leaders to be sharing your enrollment data with labor partners and your community. #K12Education is held harmless this year, but creating staffing projections based on reduced income will help pave the way for future decisions. Share your models based on your enrollment patterns, and acknowledge that this is what we know now - things will change.

How do #K12Education and #CommunityCollege #Superintendents and #SchoolBoards know if their employees are doing the job they were hired to do? Has the job changed over time? Perhaps an individual employee has been given assignments not within the scope of their job description or has taken on additional responsibilities. To make sure there is an alignment between work required and work performed a classification study prevents employers from being surprised with the request f...or additional pay for additional duties. #SchoolDistricts' job descriptions may need to be updated. Be proactive in these issues with a classification study. Classification studies create a fair, independent, third party review of job descriptions and work assignments. #SEAC provides classification studies for classified, certificated, and management positions. Summary data and our recommendations are delivered to you in a detailed report, including the data behind the recommendation. To discuss a contract for your district, reach out to SEAC consultant Roger Galizzi or SEAC Executive Director John Roach at [email protected] or [email protected] See more
