For the Schola ... "... Guardie di spada a doy man." Look it up in Florio - In almost every instance 'a' means 'of,' NOT 'in.' Ergo it is not 'the guards of the sword in two hands' but the 'guards of/for the two-handed sword.' http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/florio/search/016l.html

An older issue of the Armizare on attacking with the dagger for the Schola. Many practitioners may be holding the weapon incorrectly. As an aside this deals with the physiological aspects on gripping the rondel and not technique, the latter being how someone applies structure 'behind' the attack. Another good example of correct structure can be found with the two-handed sword. When using a two-hander if your right foot if forward your arms should be kept closer to the body a...nd if your left foot is forward your arms should be extended. The proof of this is simply to have someone push against your blade when you right foot is forward with the arms extended and then again when your sword is held closer to the body. Do the same with the left foot forward. These positions appear in the Getty wherein the first master is left foot forward with arms extended whereas the player is right foot forward has the arms held close to the body. For your reading pleasure. The Schola publishes 'The Armizare' approximately three times a year. These ARE subject to updates should more information and experimentation demand it. https://drive.google.com//1QFIxEET6mORRlSMArsOyVmHL0/view

The hands as drawn are correct. The drawn play refers to the counter to an attempted bind of the arm. The plays description reads: Questa e unaltra soprana ligadura e de ben forte. E per metter te in terra io son ben certo E dislogarte lobrazo o romperlo qual i voglo ti fazo. Lo contrario mio sie, Se tu pigli la cum la man stancha la tua dritta, La tua presa sara bona, ela mia sara fallita.... This is another high bind that is very strong. And for putting you to the ground I am very certain and I can dislocate your arm or break it this way if I want. My counter is if you grip with the left hand your right, your hold will be good and mine will fail.

"For just as effects always conform to their causes, it cannot be doubted that if error is the first teacher, all the doctrine that follows will be full of mistakes and deceptions." Gerard Thibault, 1628.

A fellow who will steal a book will steal a sword. I sold a book via Ebay to a HEMA fellow in Dursley England who named himself as John Snow. Anyone have an idea who it might be?

The descriptive paragraph for the two-handed sword guard Tutta Porta di Ferro does not say 'a sword that is not too long' but instead says 'a sword that is not held long.' In the paragraph the word is 'cuna' not 'una (... & pur chel habia bona spada non cuna* di troppa longheza.). The paragraph therefore reads: "....The first is total iron gate which is very strong and is good to wait in for every long handed weapon if your is a good sword that is not held long...." Ergo hold your blade close to you (as is drawn) and not extended out.

If there was one thing I could do it would be to stop HEMA tournaments wherein the head is a legal target. 30% - THIRTY percent of those who receive blows to the head of the type seen in tournaments WILL develop personality problems due to CTE. If you knew that you had almost a 1/3 chance of getting into a car accident every time you drove a car would you drive one? These tourneys are extremely dangerous to those who participate in them. PLEASE take a moment to read https://concussionfoundation.org/CTE-resources/what-is-CTE. Wearing heavy padding only transfers the force of a blow to and through the head more efficiently. I wonder if the reason why many a King or Prince in the medieval and renaissance period literally went crazy.

The Mass of the broadsword is a ritual liturgical celebration that takes place every year on January 6 in the cathedral of Cividale del Friuli. This ritual, unique in its kind, seems to have originated in 1366, which means the ritual occurred during Fiore dei Liberi's lifetime in his home town. Translate to read the whole article.
