These work packets that the schools have created for the kids to complete are no help.

I recently read an article critiquing the AVID program. It claims the program is unnecessary and ineffective. The author says the program blames the student for their bad study habits and not tax-evading billionaires who make money off public schools. Some of you may have children in this program and if you don’t, here’s the gist of what it is: AVID is a program that is aimed at average students who have the potential to excel. The program teaches notetaking, organizational a...nd study skills. It is implemented to help these students learn good study habits, so they are more likely to go to college. The program says that AVID students have a better chance of going to college than non-AVID students. I have worked with several AVID students. These students are very bright, in fact, they are honor students, enrolled in advanced classes. They were invited to be in the program and they still continue to do better than their peers, not enrolled in the program. One young lady is an accomplished cellist and participates in the science fair each year. These young students are most definitely going to a top-notch university when that time comes, and they can partly thank AVID. What are your opinions of a program like this?

Students nowadays make it known that they do not like old books. When I assign students a classic book in vintage binding, they usually look disdainfully at it and insist that they don’t want to read it. They are used to crisp pages underneath smooth covers and adamantly declare that they would rather read some of the more popular book series; however, I purposely try to introduce them to the classics, instilling the notion that old stories never go out of style. The ragged, ...exposed threads of the rough and worn covers and the beautifully drawn frontispieces of children’s classics need to be fully experienced. I want them to appreciate the arduous labor and time that went into the art of book binding as they read venerable tales that still have meaning to millions of readers around the world. Hopefully, they will discover that, however old a book may be, they are treasures and they have value. See more

Throwback Thursday is here! This young lady started with ScholarScope when she was in the 4th grade. She was working to improve her reading. Her hard work paid off because, by the next quarter, she was on the Principal's List and has stayed on the Principal's List for all 4 years! She will be entering the 9th grade this year, still an honor student and I'm very proud of her. Good job, Miss A. Brar!
