I rarely get personal with this page so excuse this long post. September 2nd marks Faka’s one year anniversary at the 4th Street Market, but more importantly it is my sister’s birthday. My sister helped raise me, was supportive of my dream of owning a restaurant, and was even working on helping to personally finance a brick and mortar. In 2017, she was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, she lost the battle with cancer. The business reminded me of her and I was angry she ...was gone, angry at god, angry at the world, angry at my family. I walked away from the restaurant industry , sold my equipment and gave up on my dream. I started another career and tried my best to be something I wasn’t. EXACTLY a year later after Rhonda’s passing, an opportunity presented itself for me to open a pop up. I was not looking to get back in to the restaurant business, but the way this opportunity came back in my life it felt like it was a message sent from her. I did the pop for a couple months, and it was wildly successful. I had initially planned to stay at the pop up location to save money for my own brick and mortar. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was forced to prematurely look for other places to continue Fakas. Fortunately, we saved all of our money that was profited from Fakas; unfortunately, it was only 2 months worth of profits. With such limited funding I knew the only kind of brick and mortar I could afford was a food hall. I contacted @4thstreetmarket and immediately had a meeting with owner Ryan Chase. Upon meeting Ryan he was ecstatic about the concept and what I had accomplished in such a short time. I signed the contract at the end of August, but I wanted to be open by September 2(her birthday) and wanted to pay tribute to my sister. I had just enough money to get in the food hall and only could afford to get my stall painted. I had no fancy decor, no tv menu, no signage, but it didn’t matter; opening on that day wasn’t about the money. I didn’t care that I had to print out black and white menus from the business center and hand them out to customers, none of that mattered. Getting open on that day was personal and it was my way of honoring my sister. Since we’ve opened Fakas, we’ve been successful and have overcame insurmountable obstacles all while feeling her presence. It wasn’t ever supposed to be this easy, I know this is because of her; I feel her guiding me through all of this. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RHONDA. This one is for you. See more
