38 Santa Barbara County Residents Graduate from the South County Citizen’s Academy After seven weeks of interactive classes, 38 Santa Barbara County residents ...graduated yesterday, May 18, 2019, from the South County Citizen’s Academy. The participants ranged in age and came from all walks of life. The Sheriff’s Office collaborated with the UCSB Police Department and the City of Goleta to put on the free program. The Citizen’s Academy is designed to give the public an inside look at just some of what law enforcement does on a daily basis to keep its community members safe. During the course of the program, the participants toured the jail, fired a handgun, took interactive classes in active shooter training, use of force, search and seizure law, building searches and arrest and control, just to name a few. On Saturday, the participants finished their last class, a K-9 demonstration, at the Sheriff’s Training Bureau. Then, they received their certificates of completion at a graduation ceremony and celebratory BBQ attended by family and friends of the graduates, their instructors and past Citizen Academy graduates. At the ceremony, the crowd applauded each graduate as Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Craig Bonner presented them with their certificate of completion. Upon completion of the Citizen’s Academy, the graduates agreed it was an eye-opening experience and they walked feeling better prepared to look out for their safety and the safety of others. Applicants Test for Sheriff’s Deputy Trainee, Custody Deputy and Sheriff’s Service Technician Positions The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Human Resources Bure...au hosted entry level physical and written exams this past Saturday, May 18, 2019, at the Ventura Law Enforcement Academy. 106 applicants underwent the testing for multiple positions available in the Sheriff Deputy Trainee, Custody Deputy and Sheriff’s Service Technician positions. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office @join_sbsheriff utilizes both the Allan Hancock Law Enforcement Academy and the Ventura Law Enforcement Academy for recruits who pass the rigorous process. The Sheriff’s Office has on-going recruitment for multiple positions and will be testing for Sheriff’s Deputy Trainee, Custody Deputy, and Sheriff’s Service Technician again in August at the Allan Hancock Academy facility in Lompoc. In addition, there are many other positions that the Sheriff’s Office will be recruiting for in coming months as the Northern Branch Jail facility nears completion. Those positions, such as Sheriff’s Administrative Support, Jail Cook, Utility Worker, Storekeeper, Park Ranger-Grounds, and other Support Staff positions will be announced in the next few months. Thank you to everyone who came out Saturday to the Heroes at Heart event at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Calle Real in Goleta. This event was a huge success.... We enjoyed meeting so many Goleta residents. The kids enjoyed checking out our BearCat and meeting our Jail Narcotics K9 Krypto and his handler Custody Deputy Ur. Our patrol K-9 Odin was also there with his handler Deputy Farley. Lt. Thielst, the Chief of Police Services for the City of Goleta and Lt. Camarena of the Isla Vista Foot Patrol were there as well, along with many of the deputies who patrol the Goleta Valley. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello. On Saturday morning, September 22, 2018, come stroll through the beautiful open trails on the Ellwood Mesa with Community Resource Deputy Dave Valadez and other Sheriff’s deputies who patrol the City of Goleta. The goal is to provide a way for community members to get to know deputies who work in their community, get some exercise and enjoy one of Goleta’s most scenic settings. Walk with a Cop, like our Coffee with a Cop events, is an opportunity for the public to interact with law enforcement in a casual setting and to discuss questions or concerns. Citizen’s Academy Recruitment Kickoff! Applications are Now Being Accepted The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, UCSB Police Department, and the City of G...oleta are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the upcoming Citizen’s Academy. This seven-week interactive course begins on October 10, 2018 and runs through November 14, 2018, with classes from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. every Wednesday night at various locations throughout Santa Barbara County. The class ends with a graduation ceremony and celebratory BBQ on Saturday, November 17, 2018. (Note: 100% attendance is required.) This Citizen’s Academy is geared toward community members that are seeking a career in Law Enforcement, Custody Operations, or Dispatch Operations. Additionally, this Citizen’s Academy is for any community member that would like to join the Sheriff’s Volunteer Team or enter into any of our hiring tracks. This Academy includes training in multiple areas central to modern policing, such as, Major Incidents, Active Shooter, Restorative Policing, Jail Operation, K9 Operations, Crisis Intervention, Firearms, Search and Seizure Law, and De-escalating Communication. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to be coached through practice scenarios by Senior Field Training Officers. This is a great first-step toward a career in Law Enforcement or a great opportunity to learn more about a career in Law Enforcement.
