Sarah's Science 13.11.2020

Spring Camp now enrolling for March 30 - April 3 in Oakland! This week at camp will be devoted to the study of streams. Through a series of exciting hands-on science lessons we will explore stream ecosystems and the creatures and plants that make streams so fascinating. Each day, campers will make and take home two science projects and on Wednesday, we'll take a field trip by bus to explore a local stream. In addition to studying stream life, we'll make fun art projects, play outdoors, create Lego structures, and watch science movies. You bet girls love science! Our Mother & Daughter Science Workshop (Saturday, March 21 in Oakland) is designed to let girls experience the joy of science and help mothers support their daughters' pursuit of science. In this workshop, we'll have a blast exploring electricity! Girls (and their mothers) will design and create their own fairy from our collection of awesome arts and crafts supplies. The magic will happen when they wire up a circuit using batteries, wires, switches, and color changing LED's to make their fairy sparkle! After a potluck lunch, while the daughters make a second exciting hands-on science project, the mothers will break off to share ideas and resources on ways to encourage our daughters in science. How many campers does it take to build a human circuit?! This week, our Advanced Project campers (ages 9+) made a special "Touch-to-Light" box. This box contains a simple electrical circuit with two AA batteries, wires and an LED (light emitting diode). There are two brass fasteners which leave a gap in the circuit. If this were the entire circuit, you could place a good conductor, like a metal paper clip, between the brass fasteners to complete the circuit and light the LED.... Instead of a paper clip though, place your thumbs on the brass fasteners to complete the circuit. Yes - you can use your body to light the LED! Our bodies are not nearly as good in conducting electricity as metal is, so why did the LED light up? We added a special device, called a transistor, to the circuit to boost the current! Watch the video to see how many campers we we were able to get in a circle to build a human circuit and make the LED light up! See more

For our advanced science project today we made a very cool "Touch-to-Light" box. This box contains a simple electrical circuit with two AA batteries, wires and an LED (light emitting diode). Our bodies are not nearly as good in conducting electricity as metal is, so why did the LED light up? We added a special device, called a transistor, to the circuit to boost the current! We were able to get 13 campers in a circle to build a giant circuit and make the LED light up! Let us know if you can get more than 13 people! See more
