Gussie Morane (left), Santa Monica born tennis champ made an appearance at Wimbledon in 1949. At the time her skill as an athlete was overshadowed by a kerfuffle over her outfit and the length of her skirt. Some things never change. May Sutton Bundy (right), Santa Monica resident won the Wimbledon singles title twice! In 1905 and 1907. She was the first woman to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Question: When you misjudge the size of the waves, over estimate your swimming prowess, what saves you from having a really potentially tragic day? Answer: The brave women and men who serve on our beaches as Lifeguards. "Cap" Watkins, in the dark outfit and his chief's hat, inspecting the Santa Monica lifeguards. The lifeguard service was not official until 1932, but lifeguards were patrolling the beaches as early as 1905. #SantaMonica #History ... ID 3.2.2101 ca1900s http://ow.ly/Y3BI50FfpnR See more

Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe, 1935. You've driven by it countless times, maybe even been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic just outside it's doors on Pacific Coast Highway at Porto Marina, near Sunset Blvd. Ms. Todd also resided on site after purchasing the Spanish style building in 1934. She met an unfortunate end in one of the building's garages, dying of carbon monoxide poisoning. Initially deemed 'suspicious' a Grand Jury later concluded her death was accidental. A talented and well known comedic actress from the 1920s, she appeared in more than 100 films alongside comedy royalty such as the Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton and Laurel and Hardy. 1916 panorama image of the Westside Tennis Club. Santa Monica High School is in the background. The location for the photo today would roughly be 4th street, near Pico Blvd. You'll want to scroll through each image to really be able to take this one in. It's just absolutely beautiful. #SantaMonica #History #Belmar ID2008.90.1 Santa Monica History Museum Collection... https://santamonica.pastperfectonline.com//D423F2BB-2657-4 See more

Yes that is Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe. Yes, that is Santa Monica Ford, on Santa Monica Blvd behind them. They're on the set of 'Monkey Business' which also starred Ginger Rogers. Think about it, when this photo was taken, Director Howard Hawks, D.P. Milton Krasner, Makeup Artist Ben Nye and just a whole host of brilliant creative people were right there. #SantaMonica #History 1952, ID: 3.2.3443 https://santamonica.pastperfectonline.com//029F9952-F463-4

If only every meeting was like this, outside, on the water... The 1946 Lions Club of Santa Monica meets aboard the "Bay Queen" in Santa Monica Harbor. Fred Tongue, program chairman, is at the wheel. Club President Wallace Hammer is seated at the stern, not sure if that's him on port or starboard, do you know? #History #SantaMonica ... ID 3.2.3269 http://ow.ly/CtBm50F6TkE See more

If you were making your way down Ocean Avenue, the 1500 block, between Utah Avenue (Broadway) and Railroad Avenue (Colorado), you'd find yourself strolling by the Pacific Garden Cafe. Of course, you'd also need it to be 1898. #SantaMonica #History Fred Basten Collection, 1898, ID: 170.2.75 http://ow.ly/7dly50F6QB0

We believe this terrific image (from our Outlook Collection) features pilots that may have worked at Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica. The image was taken was at Santa Monica Museum of Flying and we'd love to know the names of the gentlemen in the photo. Do you recognize your Dad, Brother, Husband, Uncle, Boss, Neighbor? It's someone's Birthday! Once the private residence of John P. Jones co-founder of Santa Monica. Later owned by King Gillette (yes, as in razors); it served a stint as a Military Academy for boys and then transformed into a beautiful hotel; the Fairmont Miramar is celebrating its 100th Birthday! Here's some history of the very beginnings of the Miramar site, as a private residence: http://ow.ly/PhcW50FfaHY And also, some pretty terrific historical images. Happy Birthday!... 1949 Actress Anne Baxter with winners of the Greater Santa Monica Bay District Press Photographers' contest. Pretty sure Emerson Gaze, whose work we all enjoy so much, is in this photo from our Bill Beebe Collection. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaks at UCLA. "At a critical time in the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. visits UCLA and delivers a 55-minute speech at the base of Janss Steps. More than half a century ago, a crowd of 5,000 students and faculty gathered at UCLA’s Wilson Plaza to hear the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., the driving force behind the civil rights movement of the 1960s."
