SIGN UP FOR THIS CLASS TO LEARN ABOUT SCENT WORK! Beginning Scent Work (Fundraiser for Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club) --- February 2021 Class Dates: Tuesday n...ight at 5:15 pm PT: 2/2, 2/9, 2/16 & 2/23 Class Format: optional 1 hour class lecture via WebEx and a private Facebook Group for discussion and homework during the week. Class will be recorded and posted in a private FB group. Class Cost: $100 for the session ($25 per class). What You Will Learn: You will learn about the basics of the game of scent work. We will introduce topics like odor, equipment, how to make and handle odor, how to make and place hides, and the concept of odor obedience. The focus of this class is to introduce you and your dog to this game. Dog and handler teams will progress at their own pace and will learn games that they can go back to for fun or if they only have a short time to train! Other topics include generalization of searching to other areas, aging, equipment/gear, handling, mild proofing games, creative container placement patterns, and an introduction into how the human can influence the search. Prerequisites: None Supplies: Scent work is pretty inexpensive to teach your dog and so to start you can make do with some things you may have around the house. However, for those of you who want to have the supplies to use in the class, you have 3 options. Option 1: Go purchase the supplies yourselfor find things around the house to use. Option 2: For $40 + exact shipping the instructor will send you all the supplies to your house. Option 3: For $40 and no shipping, you come get them the instructor pin San Jose, CA For this class you will need: * an odor for your dog to find. If you want to work with what you have at home, you can use perfume, an essential oil, lotion, or anything else with a smell that isn’t food or toxic to the dog. Note: If you want to trial in AKC or NACSW these are the odors you will use: Birch (Sweet Birch aka Betula Lenta) Anise (Aniseed aka Pimpinella Anisum variety. Other options exist; match the name exactly on this one.) Clove (Clove Bud aka Eugenia Caryophylatta or Syzgium Aromaticum) Cypress (Cupressus sempevirens) * Some smaller boxes/containers (cardboard, plastic or metal) that you can use for odor. * About 20 Q-tips * A leash that is 6 feet or so longor a longer leash that you will make a mark in/tie a knot in at 6 feet. * a glass jar for holding the Qtips. A mason jar or a food safe jar (empty glass food containers) work great! * a flat buckle collar * super tasty treats that your dog will LOVE If you decide you love the game, we will introduce other supplies later. Thank you to everyone who helped make our 2019 show a success. We had to make the best of a difficult situation after being unable to continue in Santa Clara, and moving to Vallejo while another event had already contracted the Expo Hall. 2020 is going to bring changes! We will be moving to the end of April! HELLO SUNSHINE!! Stay tuned for more information as we iron out all the details - but thank you all for continuing to support the Santa Clara Valley Kennel Club.
