SAN MARINO POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE RELEASE DATE: February 14, 2021 SUBJECT: Vehicle Pursuit - February 13, 2021... On February 13, 2021, at approximately 7:33 pm, officers were dispatched to the area of San Marino Avenue and Lorain Road regarding an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) notification of a vehicle that was involved in a previous felony pursuit. Initially, the suspect yielded near the intersection of Sierra Madre and California Boulevards. The vehicle is described as a 2014 blue Jeep Patriot Sport. As the officers were giving commands to exit the vehicle, the female driver abruptly accelerated from the scene and officers initiated a pursuit. The pursuit continued into the neighboring cities of San Gabriel, Alhambra, and Monterey Park. The driver eventually drove to the Beverly Hospital located in the City of Montebello, and stopped her vehicle in front of the emergency room. A short standoff ensued as the driver refused to exit her vehicle. Officers were able to convince the driver to voluntarily surrender and she was taken into custody without incident. Officers from the Montebello Police Department and airships from the Pasadena Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also assisted in the pursuit. The suspect, Mary Arias (3/11/1975) of Beaumont, was determined to be unlicensed and on active probation for felony evading. During a search of the suspect’s vehicle, mail from a home in the 2400 block of San Pasqual Street (unincorporated area of Los Angeles County), drug paraphernalia, and an identification not belonging to the suspect were located inside the vehicle. Currently this investigation is ongoing. If you have any further information regarding this incident, please contact the San Marino Police Department Detective Bureau via police dispatch at 626-300-0720. Doing Our Part to Continue Recovery - Celebrating Lunar New Year & Valentine’s Day Safely As you celebrate Lunar New Year, Valentine's Day, and Presidents Day, LA County Public Health advises against non-essential travel and gatherings with people not from your household. Unfortunately, we have already heard of reports of large parties being planned in the City. Please be aware that these are in direct violation of health officer orders that restrict gatherings to no more than 3 households and 15 people. We truly appreciate how the majority of the community is adapting and modifying celebrations to ensure the health and wellbeing of everyone, but unfortunately, these type of events can cause serious health ramifications. We ask that you please remember this and find ways to celebrate safely with your immediate family.

Law Enforcement Tips For Video Meetings Over the last couple of months, video conferencing is surging due to the coronavirus pandemic. Most recently, there have been reports that hackers are trying to disrupt those meetings. FBI has received multiple reports of conferences being disrupted by hate images and pornographic images known as Zoom-Bombing. In order to help secure your privacy, the San Marino Police Department would like to provide tips for keeping your video me...etings secure. The San Marino Police Department suggests the following tips: Remember that anyone can join your meeting if the link is shared to social media. Use a random meeting ID instead of your personal meeting ID to host events. Enable the waiting room feature to decide who can enter the meeting. Lock the meeting after it starts so that no one else can join. After everyone joins the meeting, do a roll call to make sure only the people you invited are logged on. Only allow the host to have control of screen sharing. Disable file-sharing so people aren’t flooded with content. With more people working from home, they are deemed to be easier targets for hackers because a lot of people don’t have the same security measures in place as their employers/schools do. Remember you have two types of hackers, the teenager-type of hacker for fun or you can the cyber-criminal that really wants to listen in. As an added measure treat your home internet connection as if it were your corporate or school connection. Log off when you’re done, and change your internet and computer passwords regularly. Feel free to contact the San Marino Police at (626) 300-0720 if you have any questions or concerns regarding video conference security.

COVID-19 Contact Tracing Text Message Scams San Marino Police Department would like to provide helpful tips to avoid being a victim of the COVID-19 contact tracing text message scams. Contact tracing is the process of identifying people who have come in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, instructing them to quarantine and monitoring their symptoms daily. Contact tracers are usually hired by a state’s department of public health and generally receive ...your number from infected persons in which you may have had close contact with. Those names and numbers are often kept in an online system. Usually, you may receive an initial text message from the health department advising you will be receiving a call from a specific number. It is important to know the tracer who calls will not ask for any personal information, like a social security number. At the end of the call, you may be asked if you would like to enroll in a text message program, which sends daily health and safety reminders until the 14-day quarantine ends. These text messages will never ask you to click on any links or ask you for any money. Here are several other steps you can take to protect yourself from text scammers: Never provide your social security, bank account, or credit card number to anyone who advises they are a contact tracer and work for the Health Department. If you receive any text messages that ask you to click on a link, do not take the bait by clicking on the link. By clicking on the link it can download software onto your device, giving scammers access to your personal and financial information. Ignore and delete these scam messages. . Protect your online accounts by using multi-factor authentication. It requires two or more credentials to log in to your account, which makes it harder for scammers to log in to your accounts if they do get your username and password. Enable auto-updates for the operating systems on your electronic devices. Make sure your apps also auto-update so you get the latest security patches that can protect from malware. Back up the data on your devices regularly, so you won’t lose valuable information if a device gets malware or ransomware. If you have any question please feel free to Contact the San Marino Police at (626) 300-0720.
