This Friday (Oct. 23) is the LAST day to order a special meal box for our FINAL event of the year: Voices From the Kitchen on Oct. 29. Enjoy an Algerian/Mediterranean vegan feast by La Cocina entrepreneurs Wafa and Mounir Bahloul of KAYMA while you watch our 1-hour virtual show. Check out this repost + pics from La Cocina’s Linda Esposito. Visit lacocinasf.org/voicesfromthekitchen for tix + meal kits! - - - - - - Love working with these two - Wafa & Mounir Bahloul - an Alge...rian couple who is about to start the city's first Algerian eatery KAYMA at La Cocina's Municipal Marketplace Their food is beautiful, flavorful and honest. At the upcoming La Cocina #voicesfromthekitchen virtual story-telling event next week, they are serving a beautiful #vegan meal similar to these items in this post. Handmade bread, dips, marinated cured olives using Wafa's very own blend of spices, harissa, a flavorful lentil broth and a lovely hand rubbed couscous with stewed vegetables. . We may be virtual but food is going to be physically connecting us together as we listen to the stories themed "CHOICES" each in our own zoom screen. The meal kits from KAYMA or other choices like Damansara straits/nyonya/peranakan or Minnie Bell's Soul Movement fried chicken will be delivered ahead to those of us lucky enough to be in the Bay Area. And a snack boxes for those beyond the bay. Order by Friday. The event is free to attend, proceeds from the meal kits go to both the business and La Cocina. #wearelacocina #storytelling #lacocina

Friends: Seeing the enormous impact of COVID-19 has made us all the more grateful for the community we have at La Cocina. We come to you for support. Within weeks, La Cocina-born businesses have seen sales decline 80-100%. Opportunities with corporate events and catering have ceased. Many have made the heartbreaking decision to temporarily close their business & lay off staff. These folks are rightfully concerned with their family’s survival & well-being of their employees. ... In response, our team is focused on the resiliency and solvency of these businesses. While we are supporting entrepreneurs in securing 100% rent abatement & navigating the process of seeking payment for their employees, it’s not enough. We’ve created the La Cocina Emergency Relief Fund, starting with $100,000 from our organization. The fund will provide emergency relief to active participants of La Cocina to meet a variety of needs, including basic necessities for personal, family or living expenses. We are actively seeking donations to grow the fund and increase its effectiveness. Thank you for letting us lean on you. Please share and take care! Visit www.Lacocinasf.org.

Like everyone, we were saddened by the closing of @missionpie , the 12-year-old restaurant and bakery at Mission and 25th near our kitchen. Even more sad was the reason behind the closing. As Mission Local wrote, it became clear to Mission Pie’s founders that running their business in a manner that adhered to its founding principles in today’s San Francisco was a no-win scenario. . Luke Tsai of @eater_sf writes: So it is, then, that while the pastry gods sometimes take awa...y, when they give, they give generously. La Cocina graduate @reem.assil will open her second location and the city’s first Arab bakery. . Tsai continues: There are a number of ways, then, to frame the story of Reem’s move into the old Mission Pie. There is, for starters, the sense that Assil is carrying on the legacy of her predecessors in the space, in terms of serving baked goods in a warm, community-minded setting. It’s also a homecoming: Assil explains that she started her career, years ago, at the La Cocina kitchen incubator just a couple of blocks away; in fact, some of the earliest Reem’s popups were at Mission Pie: 'We essentially got our start in that building. I can’t move in as quickly as someone with more upfront cash, but I’m going to stay there longer. This neighborhood needs a Reem’s.’ Indeed. Congratulations, Reem. . @pchangphoto See more
