Sometimes you’ll notice an odor coming from your sink or shower drain that smells like rotten eggs. This could be sewer gas, especially if it’s coming from a ba...throom sink or drain that isn’t used much. Sinks, toilets, and showers all have a P-trap that helps prevent sewer gas from coming back up your pipes and into your home. These traps hold a small amount of water which helps prevent gases from entering your bathroom or other areas that have drains. When the P-trap is full, any lingering gas travels up a separate pipe that vents through your roof, keeping it out of your house. If you notice an odor coming from your sink or other drain, run the water for a while to fill the trap. If the problem persists, you may need to get a plumber to check to make sure that your trap and vent are working properly.

It’s Water Wednesday - raise a glass of potable water to the men & women of the San Dieguito Water District! SDWD serves Cardiff, Old Encinitas, Leucadia, and part of New Encinitas. This group is responsible for securing, testing, and moving our drinking water as well as maintaining the infrastructure to get clean water to where it’s needed. The District works directly with the State Water Resources Control Board and San Diego County Water Authority to ensure our water meets... or exceeds all state and federal drinking water guidelines. Our water comes from the San Diego County Water Authority and Lake Hodges. It goes through the filtration process at the R.E. Badger Filtration Plant which the District jointly owns with Santa Fe Irrigation District. It goes through miles of mains and service lines to get to your water meter and into your home or business. The District also manages some of the City’s recycled water, which comes from the San Elijo Water Reclamation Facility in Cardiff. Fun fact: if you see a meter box or pipe that’s painted light purple, that’s recycled water! Maintaining #publichealth and safety is more than a matter of testing water quality - the District works closely with the Encinitas Fire Department to make sure all hydrants are functional and properly maintained and also responds to emergencies like hit fire hydrants and breaks to service lines and mains. SDWD administers new water development projects, capital improvement projects, and the recycled water program. #WaterConservation efforts, including education, outreach, and incentive programs, are also part of our job. Safety, reliability, and responsibility are at our core. #SaveWater #NPWW #RhythmofPublicWorks City of Encinitas
