We are not yelling or screaming about the Outdoor Dining Ban. When it happened, our first inclination was to "take one for the team," and if Outdoor Dining was spreading the COVID, than that's what we needed to do as a tribe. But when the decision-makers discussed the issue, no data was presented and everyone said "its complicated." Well, a loss of $25m of sales and laying off 1150 people during the holidays is also complicated, so we decided to help create a data set in an attempt to really understand whether Outdoor Dining is spreading the pandemic. Here are our results that other local restauranteurs have graciously shared with me. What does the data tell you? Thanks to all the restauranteurs that contributed.

Today the LA County Board voted on prohibiting Outdoor dining, 3-2 in favor. The Mayor from Redondo, Manhattan, Torrance, PV, and El Segundo all supported businesses, and cited lack of data in the closures. Hermosa Beach was curiously absent from the conversation, and in fact, the Mayor told a group of restauranteurs yesterday that there would be no vote today. Does anyone know where the City Council of Hermosa Beach stands on this issue? Has anyone asked, or are they still fighting over who gets to become Mayor next?

Holy shit what we'd give to have a little Citizen Cope or Colin Hay tonight. Seems like a distant memory. Ooh, no, Bedouin Soundclash or Donavon Frankenreiter or English Beat or... too many good shows. Buckle down South Bay -- the winter is here.

At some point, it’s not going to be worth it for all these small businesses to continue, says Sanford. The worst thing may happen: the big boxes win. Just like in retail with the Targets and Walmarts winning, the big boxes will win in arts and entertainment and that’s a scary thought for a guy that loves music and art. If people care about small businesses, then instead of going to shop at Target or that massive chain restaurant, they go support the small guy, he adds. A return to local would just be the coolest and greatest thing to come out of this.
