Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms out there. Did you know what Vietnamese Mother's Day, known as Lê Vu Lan, is on the 15th day of the seventh month on the Lunar calendar? The celebration is a bit different. It's reserved to honor mothers (and parents in general) who have passed.
Refugees fleeing Vietnam from the port of Vng Tàu on April 1975. April 30, 1975 marked the end of the Vietnam War and the beginning of the Vietnamese diaspora.... Millions of South Vietnamese fled the Communist regime in the intervening decades, tens of thousands lost their lives trying to escape by boat. Thousands more died in Communist "reeducation camps." It is because of the atrocities South Vietnam faced after the war that this date, April 30, 1975, is known by Vietnamese refugees throughout the world as Tháng T en, Black April.
46 years ago, the Vietnam War ended. With it millions of South Vietnamese became displaced, fleeing the communist regime. Thousands would die trying in the intervening decades trying to escape to freedom as "boat people." While the Vietnamese American Youth Alliance of San Diego (VAYA) is not hosting a Black April event this year because of the pandemic, consider attending this event hosted by the Diasporic Vietnamese Artists Network (DVAN) and moderated by Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Sympathizer" and its sequel "The Committed." VAYA hosted Dr. Nguyen at its Black April event two years ago.

Today is April 30, otherwise known as Black April. It's a deeply meaningful and important occasion for the Vietnamese diaspora. This date marked the Fall of Sai...gon in 1975 and the symbolic end of the Vietnam War and the government of the Republic of Vietnam. In the years following the end of the war, waves of tens to hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese fled the country as refugees. Last year, Vietnamese American Youth Alliance of San Diego (VAYA) hosted a conversation with Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Sympathizer." The talk was titled, "The Burden of Remembering: The Vietnam War and its Aftermath." We wanted to present a Vietnamese American's perspective about the long shadow of the Vietnam War and the plight of the oceanic refugees (aka the "boat people"). This year is the 45th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and we would have commemorated this solemn occasion on the deck of the USS Midway, one of the last American ships to leave Vietnam, taking it with more than 3,000 Vietnamese refugees. The global pandemic changed that plans. So this video serves as our virtual commemoration. https://youtu.be/pHYPFKnonTY
We wish you a Happy Easter San Diego! May your day be filled with joy and love!
