Last night’s Umoja Math & Writing Jam was amazing! So many dedicated students & tutors, and Umoja Love all night long! Outstanding Umoja crew Erin Bellamy Charl...ens Ebony Tyree & Romelia MeMe Turner with special guests visiting Samantha Jasmine Thornton, Dr Abdimalik Buul, Jonathan Henderson, Anthony Blacksher, and a surprise visit from our City College President Ricky Shabazz who visited our physics breakout session held down by Lorenza Levy! Professor Tyree was on two zooms helping students get into their math & physics breakouts while also helping the English Center stay open until 10pm alongside their great tutors and faculty! One of our favorite moments of the night was listening to students near the end of the jam talk about reclaiming their confidence and discovering that they still love Math! Thank you Kathryn Shafer & Dylan Morse you are amazing!! Thanks to all of the tutors Conan Minihan Sierra Teemsma and everyone who helped make this possible!!! See more

Here’s an especially incredible Tutor Profile, Sharmagne Messer... Hello everyone! My name is Sharmagne and I have been working here at the math center since Fall of 2018. Before that, I was a Gas Turbine Mechanic in the US Navy. I liked my job then but it didn’t give me a sense of fulfillment unlike working as a tutor. I have liked math for as long as I can remember because if you solve a problem and get it right, you can prove that you’re right! I never thought I can be a ...tutor until I started volunteering and discovered how much I loved seeing people’s faces light up when I help them understand something new. I truly enjoy my job as a tutor, and it is honestly the best job I’ve ever had and I’ve had many. One tip I have that has helped me tremendously is to be persistent, just because you didn’t succeed the first time, it doesn’t mean you will never succeed. Also, if you are overwhelmed and feel as though you aren’t making any progress, TAKE A BREAK. But don’t quit. And when the times get rough, don’t be shy to ask for help, we will be glad to help! Get tutoring from Sharmagne in Trig-Town, Monday from 9:30-11:00am, in Algebra Avenue 11:00am-12:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30am-1:00pm, Algebra Alley, Friday 9:30am-12:30pm.

Meet our great tutors! Today’s Tutor Profile: Future Software Engineer, Melody Ruth! I’m planning on going into computer science. I love the combination of logical, mathematical, creative, and language tasks involved in working on a programming project. When I’m not working on my classes or tutoring, I enjoy going to West Coast Swing dances, drawing (mostly Disney fanart), and hanging out with friends and family. I’ve been a tutor at the Math Center since fall 2019. I love m...ath, and I love helping other people understand it and grow to love math themselves. Melody tutors up to Calc 3 and Discrete Math, which includes all Algebra classes and Trigonometry. Get Calculus help from Melody, Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 5:00pm.

We like to introduce you to another of our great tutors with today’s tutor profile of Future Aerospace Engineer, Naomi Webb: Hi! My name is Naomi and for as long as I can remember, my favorite subject has always been math. I was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school, so a lot of what I learned from math came from my dad and through eventually self-teaching. When I came to City, I struggled with Calculus. But through coming to the Math Center almost every day, I ...mastered the concepts and I wanted to give back to my community the help that I was given. Being a math tutor and helping others reach that "aha!" moment and seeing how happy students are when they understand a concept is the best part of my job and why I love it so much! Naomi tutors classes in algebra, trigonometry and calculus (Math 96, 104, 116, 116X, 141, 121, 122, 150). Get math tutoring from Naomi, Monday's 1pm-5pm, Thursday's 10am-12 pm.
