In Waldorf Education, children learn about the natural rhythms of life and our kinship with all living things. Careful observation is encouraged to see what the natural world has to teach. This child is enjoying a relaxing painting experience as he describes the tortoise's shell (art is integrated throughout all subjects). The child also showed great compassion for the tortoise by structuring a shady place with a piece of wood he found, and he made sure the tortoise had access to fresh water. This week, students at Sanderling Waldorf School welcomed the month of May with our annual May Fair celebration. The May Fair is annual outdoor festival that ritually welcomes Spring, and is traditionally celebrated by Waldorf schools throughout the world. This event engages the students with the larger community and celebrates the spirit in which Waldorf schools nourish and support the child’s connection to nature and the seasonal cycles.

Happy Friday! It’s Faculty Friday and today we want to thank and dedicate today’s post to our second grade teacher, Jodi. Jodi was born and raised in Nebraska in an active, athletic family. She earned her B.S. in Environmental Planning at the University of Vermont before making a move to the West Coast. She taught Environmental Education to children in the Santa Cruz mountains for five years, during which time she discovered Waldorf education. Jodi began her teacher training... at the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training in Marin, CA while also working in the aftercare program and substitute-teaching at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula in Los Altos. Halfway through the training, an opportunity arose to study abroad in Australia, so Jodi spent the year learning, working, and traveling to Australian Waldorf schools before returning to California and relocating to San Diego in the summer of 2006. She worked as an assistant and substitute teacher at the Waldorf School of San Diego before joining our faculty in 2007. Jodi enjoys traveling, swimming, cycling, and running, and is often training for and racing in triathlons. The Nursery/Kindergarten program is a bridge between home and school for the young child (ages three to six). Children of this age learn primarily through play and imitation. The Waldorf environment fosters the child’s capacities for imagination and creativity. The rhythms of the day, week and season...s provide a structure within which the child gains a secure relationship to the world. We work with raw natural materials for a true education of the senses. It is Faculty Friday! This week we want to highlight our beloved teacher, Terri Power. Dr. Terri Power holds four degrees including a Ph.D in Shakespeare Performance awarded by the University of Exeter in England. She has been teaching children and adults since 1997 and in various settings and contexts, including working as a University Lecturer and as a Supplemental Academic Subject Teacher in inner-city school settings. She has been teaching Math and Language Arts at Sander...ling Waldorf School since 2015. Her love of mathematics has been fostered through the Waldorf curriculum and opportunities such as training with Jamie York and at Sunbridge in New York have inspired her approach in the Sanderling classroom. Terri also served as a Grades Teacher from 2016-2018 and completed her Foundational Studies at WISC during this time. Additionally, she is a published playwright and international scholar. Her book Shakespeare and Gender in Practice (Palgrave 2016) was released globally and she regularly directs plays and contributes to books, journals, and webinars - most recently with the Shakespeare Center Los Angeles.
