Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Planned for July 9 The San Luis Obispo Police Department will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation July 9, 2021 from 7 AM to 12 PM aimed at keeping people who need to go out to exercise or run essential errands safe. While the COVID-19 pandemic is requiring residents to stay home as much as possible, the San Luis Obispo Police Department recognizes the need to protect the public by looking for violations made by... bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians that make roads unsafe. These violations include drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, failing to stop for signs and signals or any other traffic violation. Officers will also look for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Bike riders will be stopped when riding on the wrong side of the road, not complying with stop signs and signals, or other violation of the same traffic laws that apply to them as drivers. Just because there’s less traffic doesn’t mean traffic rules go out the window, Sergeant Jeff Booth said. To protect you and your family, we want to make sure those that are out are following rules intended to keep them safe. The safety of bicyclists and pedestrians remains a top priority for the San Luis Obispo Police Department. So far this year, the San Luis Obispo Police Department has investigated 1 deadly and 30 injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians. To keep you and your family safe, the San Luis Obispo offers the following tips when out biking, driving or walking: PEDESTRIANS Only cross at marked crosswalks or intersections with a stop sign or signal. Look for cars backing up. Avoid going between parked cars. Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t assume they see you. Wear bright clothing during the day and use a flashlight when walking at night. DRIVERS Wait for pedestrians to cross the street. Be courteous and patient. Stay off the phone. Follow the speed limit. Look for pedestrians when backing up or turning. BICYCLISTS Always wear a helmet. Helmets are required by law for anyone under 18. Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle. Everyone who is out is reminded to practice physical distancing measures, when feasible, staying at least six feet away from others. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On Tuesday, some surfboards were stolen from the back of a truck on Kentucky Street. Later that day, Officer Inglehart found said surfboards in a homeless camp and was able to return them to their owner. You've heard it before folks: don't leave unsecured items in your vehicles. Remove everything, always. #surfisbackup

Are you headed out of town on a summer adventure? Be sure to lock up your home before you leave. Close and secure all doors and windows (even the awkwardly small window in the bathroom.) Close and secure garage doors and side garage doors too. Ask a neighbor to pick up your mail and keep an eye on things.

As we approach the Fourth of July, the San Luis Obispo Fire and Police Departments remind the community that all fireworks, including safe and sane, are prohibited in the City of San Luis Obispo, even if legally purchased from a fireworks stand in another community. Fireworks pose a significant fire danger due to increasingly dry conditions. Penalties for setting off fireworks in the city include fines that top out at $2,000. ... Community members can report fireworks observed in the City by calling the 24/7 nonemergency dispatch line at (805) 781-7312. The fire department asks that individuals only use 9-1-1 to report emergencies. We understand the community wants celebrate our Country’s Independence Day, and that fireworks have historically been a part of those celebrations; however, we encourage everyone to find safe and legal ways to participate in the Holiday. said Fire Chief Keith Aggson. In additional to the risk of causing injuries, fireworks can easily spark a dangerous wildfire, especially while our weather is hot and dry. As an alternative to using, selling, or possessing fireworks, community members can enjoy safe fireworks shows in San Luis Obispo County, including in San Luis Obispo on July 3 as part of the San Luis Blues baseball game located at Sinsheimer Park. Fireworks shows will also take place in Pismo Beach and Cayucos.

If you see abandoned furniture in the public right of way (sidewalk or street), please report it to City Utilities (who manages the City's solid waste removal contract) so removal can be coordinated with the trash company. Please email the location and what has been abandoned (couch, mattress, etc.) to [email protected] or call 805-781-7215.
