Staff spotlight: Emma Joleen Schopler, Program Director, Introductory and Outreach Programs. Joined SDCC this August! Known as "Mrs. Schopler." How she got into teaching: "I got into music education because my high school music teacher believed in me. She inspired me to share my passion with the world. I love singing and conducting choirs - that is one of the many reasons I began working with the San Diego Children’s Choir as the Program Director for the Introductory and Out...reach Programs. I am excited to coordinate the Early Years program in the San Diego school districts, online and eventually in VR! Please join us as we unite our voices in song: https://www.sdcchoir.org." Fun facts: "My family heritage is indigenous. My mother’s from the Darug people in Australia and my father’s from the Sámi people in Finland." Favorite hobbies: Contra-dancing and scuba diving! Originally from: the island continent, Australia

Happy Wednesday! It's been a minute since we featured a staff spotlight. Today's spotlight is on Deb O'Neill, Neighborhood Choir Director. Joined SDCC in 2019. O'Neill also teaches general music, chorus, band, and orchestra at three San Diego schools, and she teaches private lessons. How she got into music education: "I was really hooked on becoming a music teacher after watching "The Sound of Music" at the age of five. The scene where Maria teaches the Von Trapp children ho...w to sing with the song "Do Re Mi" evoked the response, 'When I grow up, I want to be just like her!' I spent the next fifty years studying and performing vocal and instrumental music, and started teaching lessons privately and in school at the age of twelve." Favorite hobbies: Gardening, cooking, and swimming. Here she is conducting a band class
Can't Stop, Won't Stop!...Learn about how singing prevails during the pandemic in our latest e-newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/35ff99899150/fall-newsletter-issue-1.
It takes a village! Last night's Apprentice Choir in-person rehearsal with a simultaneous livestream Zoom session was ran by teacher Mrs. Orem (top left), our on-site Zoom facilitator, parent volunteer Ann (not seen), and Chamber chorister (top middle) who volunteers as Mrs. Orem's "shadow instructor" so participants are clear on instructions. We're getting the hang of this!
