What has blotchy, yellowing leaves; yellow shoots; and lopsided, small and rancid tasting fruit? A tree that’s possibly infected with the deadly citrus tree dis...ease Huanglongbing (HLB). Make sure your summer to-do list includes routinely checking for signs of HLB and the Asian citrus psyllid, and remember to report symptoms immediately to the free California Department of Food and Agriculture hotline at 1-800-491-1899. The Inland Empire was a must-stop for me on my ag tour of California, recently appointed Assembly Agriculture Chair Robert Rivas said. Riverside and San Bern...ardino have a rich history of innovation and food production going back over a century, and I want to ensure this region remains a vital component of California’s agriculture industry, which brings in $50 billion a year to our economy. COVID-19 has introduced numerous concerns and issues to our industry, including an economic recession which has devastated many local farms in the region and throughout the state, and I’m here to learn and listen on how best to protect our farms, ranches and workers as we head into the new legislative year. CLas, the bacterium thought to cause huanglongbing (HLB), cannot be grown using traditional laboratory methods in Petri dishes on agar and nutrients. Dr. Kranth...i Mandadi's research team at Texas A&M University has developed a novel technique for laboratory cultivation of CLas, using so-called hairy roots, which are plant tissues that mimic a microbe's natural environment. Hairy root cultures support CLas bacterial growth, and these cultures can be used to screen antimicrobials to find compounds that control and/or suppress CLas. Once discovered, antimicrobials could be applied to citrus trees to prevent the establishment or reduce the impact of HLB. How does it work? Society gains $10 in benefits, on average, per $1 invested in international agricultural research and development, according to a new report by the Supporters o...f Agricultural Research (SoAR) Foundation. This report shows that international agricultural R&D, of the type that drove the Green Revolution, continues to generate a fantastic rate of return and that we have not been investing nearly enough in the types of agricultural R&D undertaken by the CGIAR, said Julian M. Alston, distinguished professor of agricultural resources economics at College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, UC Davis and coauthor of The Payoff to Investing in CGIAR Research. https://bit.ly/2IzL5wF

Today is National Farmers Day and I wanted to take this time to introduce ourselves to those who do not know us. Our family helps manage Scott Brothers Dairy Fa...rm in San Jacinto, Calif. where we milk 1,100 Holstein dairy cows. Our milk is used to make cultured dairy products and fluid milk. Our family has been farming since 1913 and my sister Janna and I will be the fifth generation to carry on the tradition. Sustainability is an important part of our mission and we strive to ensure that we are being the best stewards of the land that we can be. We make sure that we are feeding our cows a healthy diet using by-products that people cannot eat like cotton seed and almond hulls. I hope you enjoyed getting to know us and keep watching our page for more information about our farm. Have any questions or things that you would like to see? Drop a question in the comments.
