Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. was a pilot, officer and administrator who became the first African American general in the U.S. Air Force. His father, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. was the first African American to become a general in any branch of the U.S. military. During World War II, he organized the first entirely African American air unit known as the Tuskegee Airmen. By the end of the war he had flown 60 combat missions. He also helped plan the first desegregation of the Air Force in 1948. He retired from the military in 1970 but continued to work for the government to help improve transportation for Americans. Happy belated birthday John Lewis! John Lewis was an American civil rights leader and politician. Mr. Lewis was inspired by the words and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was one of the organizers of the March on Washington in 1963. In 1965 Lewis led more than 600 peaceful protestors across a bridge in Selma, Alabama. The protestors were attacked by police officers. This tragic event helped pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965., which made it illegal to prevent African Americans from voting. Lewis served in the United States Congress for more than 30 years, and made it his life to fight for equal rights for all Americans. Thank you John Lewis!
