25 Reasons Why I Am Grateful -by Mrs. Miranda
LARRY ITLIONG, National Filipino American History Month Larry Itliong immigrated to the United States in 1929 at the age of 15 where he began working as a farm laborer. He was interested in becoming an attorney one day to help seek justice for the poor. Because he grew up in poverty and faced severe racism his aspirations of becoming an attorney never materialized due to the lack of a higher education. Larry organized agricultural workers starting in the 1930s, where they ...walked off the farms of grape growers to demand minimum wages. Later, Larry Itliong spoke to Cesar Chavez asking him to join him - knowing that all workers had to stand together in their quest for justice. At the time, Chavez did not think his Mexican workers would want to go on strike, but they voted unanimously to join with the Filipino workers. The strike lasted for 5 years but in the end everybody won, the grape growers agreed to increase the pay for workers and also provided medical insurance along with implementing controls over toxic substances that were used in the fields. We have all heard of the wonderful things that Cesar Chavez has done for the farm workers because he was the director of the UFW (United Farm Workers), but Larry Itliong was also instrumental in this historic social justice and economic movement. Mexicans and Filipinos worked together to make this great transition possible. See more
We continue sharing during National Filipino American History Month. Xian says, I am a proud Filipino-American! I’ve learned some details of our history & culture from my family, who were mostly born and raised in the Philippines! I have traveled to different Philippine islands and have learned a lot from the people. I am also a big fan of Filipino cuisine! I eat Kare-Kare, Dinuguan, and Mechado. (Just to name 3 of my favorites.) I fully understand Tagalog, and I am working on trying to speak the language fluently! Here I am pictured in a Barong Tagalog a traditional form of dress in the Philippines."

1st Holy Communion was celebrated by our current 3rd grade class finally!!! The celebration was postponed twice - the first time was due to the pandemic shelter-in-place and the second time was because of the poor air quality from the fires in our area. Students created a beautiful 1st Holy Communion banner for their own chair and were safely social distanced apart. We were blessed to have the support of Father Mark, Mrs. Cruz, Mrs. Esteves, Mr. Goncalves, Mrs. Miranda and Mrs. Castro who truly made this a very special occasion for our Communicants. - Photos courtesy of David Mufty from Grins to Go.
Mosaics depicting the mystery of God were created by the 6th Grade students. This assignment was from Be My Disciple, ‘Inspiring Art’.
