WHEN 18 US TOO OLD Safe Harbors is supporting immigrant unaccompanied minors in a special way. When they become 18 years old, they are aged out of Homeland Security care. If they have no sponsor or relatives to take them in, they are subject to deportation. ... For many that would be to a country they fled as a child and have long since lost contact with family and support systems. They are subject to all forms of exploitation. Safe Harbors is now providing housing and care for the first of our aged out migrants for whom the Immigration Court has permitted our sponsorship. We are grateful to our immigration legal partner, Casa Cornelia Law Center, for representing these youths and enabling us to offer them care at a crucial time in their lives. (These youth have legal standing to reside in the USA. Photo of our first aged out youth. Name and ID withheld to provide privacy.)

The Imperial Valley Welcome Center. URGENT: EXCITING OPPORTUNITY to establish a new Welcome Center in Southern California Christ Ministry Center and Safe Harbors Network have been offered an amazing opportunity: the use of a nice two-story (closed) church building for asylum seeker families in the Imperial Valley, California. ... This will be the first facility in Imperial Valley to house asylum seekers with no sponsor who require longer stays than the 72 hours now provided. There are three land ports of entry along the California/Mexico border. Two are in San Diego County and are served by us and other welcoming facilities in San Diego. The third land crossing is at Calexico in Imperial Valley. Currently, there are limited resources in the Imperial Valley, though they sometimes have as many asylum seekers as San Diego. The Welcome Center will work closely with Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Homeland Security to make sure the immigrants and our communities are safe. We also will call upon our established colleagues and partners, such as Catholic Charities, International Rescue Committee, Jewish Family Services, faith communities, health providers and immigration legal assistance. By opening the Imperial Valley Welcome Center, we will be able to provide help along the entire Southern California Border, from San Diego to Yuma. DONATIONS: The building will need many improvements, and cash donations are encouraged and needed. Contact us to donated furnishings, clothes, and non-perishable food. VOLUNTEERS: For anyone interested in volunteering, please call (619) 723-1371. We are also looking for a shelter manager, ideally a couple, who speak Spanish and English. Ideally, they should live on campus, rent free. This will be the perfect place for congregations in San Diego County to plan day mission trips that will make a huge difference in the lives of many immigrants

We have had dozens of babies born to Mothers under our care at CMC/Safe Harbors’ Welcome Home. Meet this little fellow born IN THE WELCOME HOME this week. His Mom, a Honduran asylum seeker (legally in the USA) went into labor and delivered him before medics arrived. Both are doing well. Your support of CMC and Safe Harbors Network helps make safe places for families like this while they await their immigration court dates.

So very pleased, but not surprised, that Sister Norma Pimentel has been chosen as Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People 2020. She heads up Catholic Charit...ies of the Rio Grande Valley and manages the immigrant shelter in McAllen TX. We were two of the original nine border shelter network sites that work with the United Nations Refugee Agency and Church World Service. You might say we were the "bookends" along the U.S. Southern Border (San Diego and McAllen). A richly deserved honor for a dear colleague. SAFE HARBORS AWARD Safe Harbors Network is the recipient if the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) San Diego Humanitarian Organization of the Year Award for 2020. IRC San Diego Executive Director Donna Duvin presented the award to Safe Harbors Executive Director Bill Jenkins in a virtual Awards Banquet Monday.... On behalf of Safe Harbors’ staff, volunteers, and supporters, I am honored to accept this award, Jenkins said. IRC and Safe Harbors forged a partnership last year whereby Safe Harbors seeks to provide shelter and basic essentials for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, while IRC provides case work to help our residents efficiently move to self-sufficiency. We partner in meeting the needs of the marginalized at their most vulnerable needs, such as beds, food, spiritual, health and legal support, and assimilation skills. he added. The International Rescue Committee is a global humanitarian aid, relief, and development organization. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC provides emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster. The IRC is currently working in about 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities where it resettles refugees and helps them become self-sufficient. It focuses mainly on health, education, economic well-being, power, and safety. Consisting of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, international development experts, health care providers, and educators, the IRC has assisted millions of people around the world since its founding.

I have had the great good fortune to meet many award winning journalists as our paths crossed along border/immigration issues over the past few years. Jean Guerrero has covered our immigrant welcoming ministry from day one. Now she has published a MUST READ book that explains how HATE has become so deeply embedded in White House policy. Please take seven minutes to hear her summary on MORNING JOE (MSNBC). Then get the book!
