Thanks to Trent Jacobs for a great master class today! In addition to coaching a couple of studio members, he offered some insights into his process as a commercial reed maker.
Whee! In today's studio class, we had our first remote group improvisation session! Using Zoom and Cleanfeed, we were able to hear each other clearly while all playing, and overcame the issue of latency by just having one person improvise while everyone else played a drone. We used a variety of scales, including a couple from Yusef Lateef's "Repository of Scales and Melodic Patterns."
Thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Lyman for a wonderfully detailed and informative master class on Tuesday night! We learned things about posture, voicing, practice techniques (slowly!), applying scale work to repertoire, vibrato production, communicating musical ideas effectively to an audience, and more. Thanks also to everyone who came just to watch!
Come hear bassoonist Monica Ellis and the rest of the always incredible Imani Winds tomorrow night at Sac State as part of the New Millennium Concert Series!
Thanks to Bill Buchman for an exceptional master class on Saturday! And thanks to Forrests Music, Gebrüder Mönnig Holzblasinstrumente, and Reeds 'n Stuff for organizing it all and brining wonderful reed machines and instruments for us to try!
We're excited to welcome Bill Buchman for a master class this weekend, along with Forrests Music, Gebrüder Mönnig Holzblasinstrumente, and Reeds 'n Stuff! The event is free and open to the publichope to see you there.
We truly loved having Sara Schoenbeck visit us over the past couple of days as part of the Sacramento State School of Music’s Festival of New American Music! She taught a mind- and ear-opening workshop on improvisation and extended techniques, spoke about her career and her musical aesthetic/inspirations/methods, and played a beautiful and moving concert. She was even generous enough to invite the whole studio to play on her concert, using some of the group improvisation exercises from her workshop. We’re excited to keep working on everything she introduced us to! Watch her entire concert (with guests pianist Wayne Horvitz, oboist Kyle Bruckmann, and the Sac State Bassoon Studio) here: https://www.facebook.com/sacstatemusic/videos/2460652324032814/
Congrats to everyone on a great joint bassoon/oboe studio recital tonight! And check out the second photo to see that yes, Hugorafael played Telemann with those balloons attached
