Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Stop judging and you will not be judged. (Luke 6:36) I have a tendency to become focused on myself in prayer and talking to God. I spend most of my prayer time reflecting on my life, my faith, and my sins. During Lent I am especially reminded of the suffering and pain, the intense sorrow that Jesus went through for those sins. This draws me to ask for God’s mercy, forgiveness, and guidance to avoid future sin. However, this rea...ding is a reminder that it isn’t about me. As much reflection as I do on myself, I must also act with the same qualities to other people that I ask from God. The journey to become more Christlike isn’t only about finding God within myself. It is also about treating everyone how Christ did, the same way he treats me. Every time I ask God for mercy, there is someone I could show mercy to as well. Dear Lord please help me act in Your ways to the people in my life. - Madeline Yamamoto

This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him. (Mark 9:2-10) In today’s Gospel, the disciples are told to listen to Jesus through an incoming voice of heaven. Those three words, listen to Him stuck with me. As I reflected upon it, I wondered how one could possibly listen to God. I realized that God calls me every single day through the simplest of acts. Maybe I hear God’s voice in someone else’s actions or words, like a friend, a sibling, or a parent. Or maybe I’ll hear Hi...s voice in the daily readings where a phrase sticks with me and I realize it is Him trying to tell me something, just like I’m doing right now when writing this reflection. It is in those simple acts in my everyday life that I have to look for Him. Yet, it is those acts that I always seem to ignore in the midst of the stress and responsibilities I face in my everyday life. God is challenging me to stop, and pay attention to those small moments because that is where I’ll find His voice. I encourage you to stop right now for a second to think about where you heard God’s voice today. What small act of love, as small and trivial as it may seem, have you witnessed lately where you think God was present? God, allow me to hear Your voice in the simple acts of love that are present in my everyday life. And allow me to not only hear your voice but that I may be able to follow whatever path you wish me to take. - Anonymous

You have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you. (Matthew 5:43-44) God Loves Us All Perfectly and Calls Us to Do the Same... In today’s reading, Jesus reminds me that loving my neighbor extends not only to those who I consider to be kind and peaceful toward me, but also to those who have wronged me. He challenges me to rise up and to forgive. It often seems to me like a daunting task to try to be perfect in resisting the temptation to harden my heart against those who have hurt me. Then I remember that we are all united in our struggles against sin. It is not me against my enemy but us against sin. I remember that if I want to be like Christ I must give all my efforts to pray for my enemies as he commands me. I remember that we are all children of our heavenly Father worthy of love. O God, let us show each other love as indiscriminately and perfectly as you do. Help us to soften our hearts and forgive those who trespass against us. Amen. - Sofia De La Cruz

Meet our Community Member of the Week: Maddie Yamamoto Hello! I’m Maddie Yamamoto! I’m a second year computer science major in Muir. A fun fact about me is I’m getting confirmed in April! And I’ve been looking at different saints lately so feel free to drop your confirmation saint and why you chose him/her. Why did you join Newman/Kyrie? I joined Newman because I wanted to explore my faith and be connected to UCSD. I love the open friendliness that everyone has. The who...le community feels open to talk and listen and grow with each other. There’s a genuine care in the Newman community. I’m happy to be a part of it. What draws you to Catholicism? I’m Catholic because I love God. I’m drawn in by the hope that He puts in my life, whether in the form of beauty, simple miracles, or the people around me. The realization that these things must lead back to Him make me want to learn and explore in our faith. I’m pretty new to it all and it’s exciting to learn about the meaning and thought on every level of Catholicism and feel connected to it.
