Dear Parents/Guardians- RSS is excited about celebrating the Red Ribbon Campaign’s National Red Ribbon week, October 26-30th. This week is the largest and longest running campaign dedicated to drug prevention. At the elementary level, schools focus on teaching students about the benefits of building lifelong healthy habits, physically, mentally, and emotionally. At Richmond Street School, we are using this week to encourage children, families, and our community to live heal...thy, happy and drug free lives. Students will have the opportunity to participate through their class as all activities will be coming via email through the teachers. All activities are optional, but we are encouraging everyone to participate. Did you know that being kind can have physical effects on the body? Researchers have found that viewing, receiving, and performing kind acts can lead to calmness, relaxation, less headaches, eased pain, lower blood pressure and increased energy levels. Find ways to practice random acts of kindness with your children using the suggested activities your student’s teacher will be sharing. Cavities (also known as caries or tooth decay) are one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood in the United States. The good news is that cavities are preventable. Encourage your student to brush and floss daily. Then, watch RSS’s PLTW teacher, Dr. Uzoff’s experiment showing the effect of soda, water, and milk on teeth enamel. Did you know that 50% of your child’s mealtime plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables? Help your child track their fruit and vegetable intake during Red Ribbon Week. Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk will take place virtually on Sunday October 25. This annual event raises money for the Friendship Foundation, the Skecher's Foundation, and public education. The Friendship Foundation and Skecher's Foundation are both wonderful organizations dedicated to supporting individuals with special needs. And our local public schools also receive significant financial support through this fundraiser. Last year, ESUSD had 551 registered participant...s in the Skecher's Walk. Registration is only $30 per person, yet the event raised over $131,000 for our El Segundo Education Foundation. If you do the math, that means last year for every $30 an ESUSD family donated, Skecher's gifted our schools over $237 each time. It's an amazing return for each dollar spent! Please join us in participating in the Skecher's Walk virtually this year.
