"Make it to the Table: Don't Drink and Drive this Thanksgiving Holiday"

Riverside DUI Enforcement 08.12.2020

BE SAFE AND TAKE A SOBER RIDE HOME THIS THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY Riverside, California For those who are traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Riverside Police Department encourages drivers to arrive at their destinations safely by not driving impaired. During the Thanksgiving holiday, November 25-29, 2020, the Riverside Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. Officers... will be actively looking for other unsafe driving practices speeding, not wearing a seat belt, and driving distracted, to make sure everyone has a safe holiday. Sergeant Ryan Wilson, of the Riverside Police Department said, we want everyone to enjoy the holidays and be safe when they are traveling. Taking simple safety measures like driving sober, following the speed limit and wearing a seat belt helps keep yourself and others safe. The Riverside Police Department reminds drivers that a DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN SAFETY OPERATION Riverside, California The Riverside Police Department will conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation November 24, 2020, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. aimed at keeping people who need to go out to exercise or run essential errands safe. These violations include drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, failing to stop for signs and signals or any other traffic violation. Offic...ers will also look for pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Bike riders will be stopped when riding on the wrong side of the road, not complying with stop signs and signals, or other violation of the same traffic laws that apply to them as drivers. Sergeant Ryan Wilson, of the Riverside Police Department said, we want the public to understand that bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers should be sharing the road and following all traffic laws intended to help everyone get where they need to go safely. Exercising a few simple precautions can help reduce injuries and deaths in our community. The safety of bicyclists and pedestrians remains a top priority for the Riverside Police Department. In 2018, the City of Riverside investigated 7 fatal and 163 injury collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians. To keep you and your family safe, the Riverside Police Department offers the following tips when out biking, driving or walking: PEDESTRIANS Only cross at marked crosswalks or intersections with a stop sign or signal. Look for cars backing up. Avoid going between parked cars. Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t assume they see you. Wear bright clothing during the day and use a flashlight when walking at night. DRIVERS Wait for pedestrians to cross the street. Be courteous and patient. Stay off the phone. Follow the speed limit. Look for pedestrians when backing up or turning. BICYCLISTS Always wear a helmet. Helmets are required by law for anyone under 18. Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow moving vehicle. Everyone who is out is reminded to continue to practice physical distancing measures, when feasible, staying at least six feet away from others. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Too many people wrongly believe they are safe in the back seat unrestrained. 46% of all front-seat occupants killed in crashes in 2017 were unrestrained, but 56% of those killed in back seats were unrestrained. Regardless of vehicle type, seat belt use is the single most effective way to stay alive in a crash. #GoSafelyCA

"Click It or Ticket" isn’t about the citations; it’s about saving lives. Of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017, 47% were not wearing seat belts. To help prevent crash fatalities, we need to step up enforcement and crack down on those who don’t wear their seat belts. #GoSafelyCA
