The name of this pose comes from the name of the Warrior who led Siva's army in the poem Kumara sambhava -- as Iyengar says, the "powerful hero created by Siva from his matted hair." When the chest is fully expanded in this pose it helps deep breathing. It relieves stiffness in the shoulders and back, tones up the ankles and knees, and cures stiffness of the neck. ... BKS Iyengar warns about Vira 1 - All standing poses are strenuous -- this one in particular. If you have a heart issue, take care in this pose. Even those who are strong should not dwell too long! Read on for steps and tips Inhale in Tadasana. Exhale and jump feet 4-4.5 feet wide (again, wider than you think! Don't underestimate yourself here. This pose is POWER, and you are powerful.) Raise both arms over the head, touching the palms. Move the right foot 90 degrees to the right. Pivot the left foot slightly to the right. Make sure your feet are placed wide enough on the mat to accomodate your hip bones. If you feel wobbly, you need space to stabilize your pelvis-- look at the photo to see what we are talking about. The face, chest, and right knee are all facing the same direction. Bend the knee until the right thigh is parallel to the floor and the knee makes a right angle. The knee must be aligned over the foot, never beyond. Lengthen and tighten the left leg behind you Gaze upward toward the palms. Stretch the spine from the neck to the tailbone. Hold for a few steady breaths and change sides. The joy we experience through the fire created in this pose is the love between Siva and Shakti. The power we feel is that power of that warrior archetype, ready to take a stand for what's right and feel that purpose and confidence while carrying out our will.
