How do you know what to balance the foot around? *Updated* The studies of Ducket, Ovnicek, Caldwell, Ferrie and Myers and Kornherr have all stated the centre o...f rotation (COR) as an important datum point for establishing balance around. I have been asked a few times how do you know where the COR is without an X-ray? This Infographic shows some of the hoof mapping systems out there and how to establish the COR amongst other proportional measurements. The Caldwell mapping system takes a line from the base of the buttress of the heel to the inside of the white line on each side and crosses them over to establish the COR. Caldwell also advocated that the length of the dorsal wall should correspond with the length from the toe to the COR and the heels to the COP (Duckets dot). Duckets bridge is shown across the widest part of the sole. Duckets dot is the centre of pressure and corresponds with the extensor process of the distal phalanx. Some of these points can be difficult to establish once the foot is shod. Jim Ferrie showed that with the hairline split into thirds the intersection between the first and second third from the toe on a lateral view correlated with the COR. Ovnicek expanded on Ducket and suggested that in the average foot the tip of P3 was 1 from the apex of the frog and the breakover should be 1/4 forward of that. The appropriate breakover point has also been suggested to be the same distance as the widest part of the frog to the COR. And it is widely accepted that the base of a shoe should be equi distance from its last bearing point at the heel to the COR and the COR to the last point of breakover. The ELPO system (fig.1) suggests a modified Ovnicek and Ducket method. 50/50 around the COR is something that I advocate for in many of my posts. This protocol of achieving 50/50 to the point of breakover and many of the landmarks and proportional measurements have been developed with the help of Myers and Kornherr (EPC Solutions) who advocated over the years for the use of COR over and above COA (Centre of Articulation) which is a moveable point. Many of these points and proportions match with each other when put onto the foot as you can see from the image. Using these methods can and will help both podiatrists and owners to recognise good balance of the hoof. The centre of rotation can be seen inside the green circle in the radiograph. The middle of the distal condyl of the middle phalanx. The methods shown help to locate that point as an external reference point.
