Retroformat Silent Films Los Angeles 29.06.2021

Once upon a time in Hollywood...women were among the most powerful players in town. And June Mathis was one of the most powerful. The screenwriter and producer was once the highest-paid executive in Hollywood and, among her many accomplishments, championed a young unknown actor named Rudolph Valentino for his breakthrough role in THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1921). Happy belated birthday (born June 30, 1887) to a true pioneer of early cinema! We hope you enjoy this birthday tribute, created by Retroformat's wonderful volunteer @MySilentBoyfriend!

Hart (1864 - 1946) passed away at the age of 81, he bequeathed his home to the County of Los Angeles to be converted into a park and museum for the public. "When I was making pictures," he said, "the people gave me their nickels, dimes, and quarters. When I am gone, I want them to have my home." Learn more about this incredible piece of Hollywood history tonight at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) as we present an... encore presentation of William S. Hart's THE BARGAIN (1914), followed by a rerun of our interview with Beth Werling: Collections Manager at the William S. Hart Museum. Watch on YouTube: YouTube.com/RetroformatSilentFilms

The latest episode of Star Trek Discovery (Season3, Episode 4) on CBS All Access, deals with bringing the crew together after an ordeal. First, they try a dinner, but it ends in a squabble. In the end, Zora, the computer of the USS Discovery, has a movie recommendation, and Buster Keaton's "Sherlock Jr." is screened on a "holoprojector. Everyone re-bonds while laughing at the film. The episode takes place in the year 3188, proving that Keaton and silent film are for the ages! You can try CBS All Access and see the episode for free at all-access.

Our musical director Cliff Retallick wowed the crowd with a brand new score, performed live via the FM radio feed, creating a magical night under the stars. Crew from local news channel KTLA 5 News were kind enough to stop by to see what all the buzz was about, and Retrormat volunteer and producer Marie Retallick was quick to catch in on camera!
