This year, we will begin a monthly post with a different diagnosis and photo taken by the talented employees of Retina Consultants of America. January’s Image of the Month is of Coats disease, and this photo was taken by our very own Chue Vang of our Elk Grove/Fairfield team! Coats disease is a predominantly unilateral (95%) condition resulting in the progressive development of abnormal retinal vessels. It is typically seen in the temporal retina as telangiectasis with aneu...rysmal changes that light up like a bulb on angiography. The vascular abnormalities are sometimes seen by themselves, but can also be associated with varying degrees of exudation ranging from focal exudates to total retinal detachment. Pediatric cases can result in leukocoria and be confused with retinoblastoma. When diagnosed in adulthood, as in this case, the pathology tends to be less severe and findings are more likely to be confined to the peripheral retina. See more

We at Retinal Consultants Medical Group are getting the COVID19 vaccination and encourage all our patients to consider getting the COVID19 vaccines when they become available in the next few weeks to months. We know that some of us have specific reasons not to get vaccinated yet, and that is fine. Please consider the following information if you are unsure about receiving the vaccination: The number of infections is skyrocketing. ... You use antibodies all day long to stomp out disease. Vaccinations make antibodies. Vaccines have a long and safe history - the reason most of us live past thirty and are not terribly disabled is because of vaccines against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, meningitis, Hepatitis B, polio, and in the old days, smallpox. There is no virus in the current vaccines and no way to get COVID19 from them. While no medical treatment is 100% safe, vaccination is much safer than COVID19 infection. By getting a vaccine, you become a human shield and protect not only yourself, but your loved ones, your patients, your community, and your coworkers. Lastly, the sooner most of us get vaccinated, the sooner restaurants, bars, stores, and travel open back up, and the sooner we can get back to normal life.
