For Angoleiros and Capoeiristas that do this art form from places that are not Brazil, the most important thing--much more important than who can do the prettiest bananeira, or sing the longest ladainha, or kick the hardest--for us the most important thing must be learning how to approach and contribute to the art form without acting as a colonizer.
We don't post much on social media, but we train hard and approach Capoeira Angola with respect and sensitivity to its traditions. Capoeira Angola is a beautiful manifestation of the struggle against white supremacy. It is an elegant platform to share philosophy & wisdom, and spread teachings of awareness and survival against treacherous adversity. It is physically challenging and brings great strength to the bodies that practice it.... It is musically an active meditation that combines rhythm, melody, and harmony to create a trance that can feel super-human to its participants. Capoeira Angola is not something we do to aggrandize ourselves, but it is something we do so that we can continue to exist in a world that is impatient and destructive to people and traditions that are marginalized. It is the essence of strength, grace, and genius in the shadow of oppression.
Hey good people, Stay stretching, and doing whatever conditioning you can to keep your flexibility and strength up. Stay progressive and active in your mind and in the world. Stay musical and poetic in your daily life. The struggle always continues!
We still are not able to train, but our philosophy remains. Be safe and strong.

We are so thankful for everyone that came and shared in this weekend's workshops with Mestre Cabello. We truly appreciate his hard work and creative gifts in the music, movement, history, and culture of Capoeira Angola. Thank you to all the people who spent time with us this weekend, and also to the people who have shared their energy with us over our eight years training at Pieter in Lincoln Heights. Obrigado e Axé!
