Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic which means it disconnects the mind from the body. And it disconnects the cortical portion of the brain from the limbic portion of the brain. There were some studies that showed that when a person had a greater degree of dissociation, the more prolonged and robust the antidepressant effects were for those patients. That being said, in other studies it actually shows that maybe dissociation is not as important as we think it is. But in gen...eral, based off of our experience that the longer one can dissociate, the more effective ketamine can be. Although it's not absolutely mandatory or necessary.
