How do you respond when your life feels like a boat that’s taking on water, when things aren’t getting better, and when there’s no end in sight? How do you deal with the feeling of not having it all together or of living in what seems like a storm in the open ocean? Jesus promises, I will walk toward you in the midst of the storm, I will walk with you, and I’ll even get in the boat that’s sinking.

Are we aware of the ways that the hungers in our lives right now are driving all sorts of decisions and behaviors? The gospel slows us down in a world that is moving forward at light speed and directs our attention to the deeper longings in our bones that affect our trajectory for life. Jesus proclaims that underneath all of our frenetic racing and striving, there’s actually a deeper hunger for true justice and unconditional acceptance. ... And he says to us, I am the Bread of Life. Come to me, and you will never be hungry. Jesus satisfies our deepest hunger. #breadoflife

Howard Thurman is known for his radical nonviolence and his key role as the "spiritual foundation of the civil rights movement." He pastored various congregations throughout his career, most notably the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, the first racially integrated intercultural church in the United States. His non-violent approach to faith and civil rights had a direct influence on activists like Martin Luther King, Jr., whom Thurman mentored while... he was a doctoral student at Boston University. This month and every month, Thurman reminds us that God is for those who have their backs against the wall.
