The beginners are progressing nicely. After a few weeks using a soft glove, we move them on to a kyudo yugake.

That was fun ... the San Mateo Nippon Gakuyen asked us to share a Japanese cultural experience for their school and we just finished the Zoom kyudo demo. We spent an hour with the Japanese language school students who ranged in age from grade school to high school, with many family members joining as well. We gave them a kyudojo tour, starting with entering the dojo, showing the yumi, ya, hassetsu charts, kamidana, and makiwara, then brought them virtually up the yamichi to install a target in the sand azuchi. We demonstrationed makiwara shooting, 28-m distance shooting, and mokuba horse archery. The kids had lots of interesting questions and they kept asking well after the hour-long schedule had ended. Thank you to SMNG Parents,Teachers and Students!
Next installment from Juandiego.

Nothing like kyudo in the rain and mist. We are grateful for the much needed rain in California. Class can still go on, in spite of required outdoor practice only, and we focused on tatesen (the vertical and horizontal lines). One of the group members had her first yugaeri, where the bow turned naturally on arrow release as a result of proper kai! Tea break was on the deck, socially distanced. Is that Bernie in the 3rd photo, sitting on the left?
