ATTENTION Parents and Pet Owners: Euphorbia Tirucalli aka Pencil Cactus aka Sticks of Fire (there are many types, and many names) I’ve seen posts and warnings... but now that I see the plant EVERYWHERE I decided to do some research. Native to Africa, it is used by some cultures for medicine and the white poisonous sap, called latex, can be easily converted into the equivalent of gasoline. (Called latex is not actual latex) In the states, they are very popular among succulent/cactus collectors and have grown in popularity because of their colors. (they’re everywhere) One of the reasons these plants are so easy to grow is these saps have some degree of antifungal and antibacterial activity, which probably keeps them from getting infected and creates a self-sealant. This plant is toxic and I don’t think it’s recognized as such (not as toxic as the deadly oleander or a poinsettia but people are familiar with those) So, should your kids or pets be playing next to this plant and a stem breaks off, the latex, will cause an irritation, burning, and redness of the skin. Humans will have something like a rash and blisters. Pets will scratch at it until bald, creating wounds and scars. If it gets in your eyes, it could cause swelling, redness, burning, ulceration, and even blindness. With pets, it’s the same. If it is ingested, stomach pain, vomiting, and nausea symptoms will follow. Most businesses are using these plants to deter you from walking your dog on their property, same with home owners. If you find your child or pet has come in contact with latex, please seek medical attention. Please Share and help make this plant recognizable to everyone.
