Dear Mom, : I feel incredibly grateful to have you as my Mom. The things I remember most about you: you are always there for me no matter what the circumstances, no matter how bad my mood was, no matter what time of day or night. You are my rock and foundation. You continued to pick me when I did not believe in my ability to chase my overall goals. You guided me through my struggles and pain to find my overall purpose in this world. You have given everything for my we...ll-being and set the path for my career! I cannot believe I am a lead registered dietitian for Welbehealth within my first year as an RDN. I am very grateful for the lessons and advice you provided throughout my twenty-nine years of life. You have sacrificed many precious moments in your life so that I could have them in mine. I remember spending almost whole nights with grandpa and grandma Sousa‘s home because you ensured dad did not lose his mind at the meat locker. You were always the one who supported the family through the downs and lows. Mom, when you asked me to pursue my dreams, little did you know that you were one of the only people who believed in my ability. I knew it was a little frustrating for you since you could not help me with my homework when I was in middle and high school. But I am thankful for you to help me with my patience to go through difficult times. Today, I am a registered dietitian who dreams of helping older adults’ nutritional status and educating them to see another birthday with their families. Because of you, I get to make a dream a reality. You are the reason for my success. Your sacrifice is not for granted. I am so proud to call you, my Mom. You are the best Mom ever, and like you, there cannot be any other. I will try my best to pay you back with love and kisses for all of the troubles I did when I was little. I promise! : You may not know this about me, but I did not think I would have done this without you by my side. You gave me a place to call home. You welcome me to a group of people who I call my family and friends. You got me involved in a culture I will continue to represent until my last breath. I am not finished with my educational and professional journey, and I want you and dad to know I am truly blessed and thankful for you both to give me a second chance with my wonderful life. : I love you, Mom, and thank you for everything! #happybirthdaymom See more

This Halloween is a little different from the past Halloweens, but the message is still the same for the future Halloweens. Candy, friendship, and traditions. Here are some spooking tips to help with your Halloween! Be aware of calories and your environment. First, please consider watching protective equipment if you are considering going to different homes or participating in Halloween-theme parties! You are responsible for controlling the spread of COVID-19. Second, w...eight management is always a nutrition-related challenge for many individuals, especially during the holidays. Consider making a plan on how much candy you consume during or after Halloween. Having a solid meal BEFORE you go trick-or-treating with your friends or children. Consuming a meal can reduce the temptation to snack while walking or to overindulge during a party. Staying Active & Spooked Physical activity can be an excellent family activity for you, your kids, or your friends. Consider walking around your neighborhood instead of driving kids house to house for Halloween. Since we are in a pandemic, set a goal of how many houses or streets you’ll visit and communicate with your kids about candies or tricks. Lastly, bring a few bottles of water and a flashlight, and comfortable shoes for walking. Raise the Spooky Factor Plan and serve healthy snacks dressed up in Halloween or other holiday themes. Numerous creative ideas are being shared online at this time of year. Consider viewing ideas on Pinterest or other sharing platforms where you can see healthy and creative food items to share with families and friends. *please my bio for a link for healthy ideas* Halloween is Only One Day Halloween can be a fun and interactive night for both kids and adults. Luckily, Halloween only comes around once every year, so consider enjoying the night without the guilt of consuming bad candies and a minimal amount of helpful rules for moderation. One night will not ruin your overall healthy lifestyle! #nutrition #dietetics #diet #halloween #halloweenideas #food #RD #RDN #geriatricRDN #MSinNutrition #holidaynutritiontips #joinmeinmyjourneytomymastersdegree

Happy Saturday everyone! Just sharing a very helpful video on recognizing the signs of a stroke! FAST is the acronym used in this video. FAST serves as a mnemonic to help detect and enhance responsiveness to the needs of a person having a stroke. The acronym stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time to call emergency services. The video shows an excellent example of FAST from the daughter and wife of the gentlemen. I am confident that sharing this video with your friends and family will help save lives!

Atrophic Gastritis (AG) is the chronic inflammation of the stomach's gastric mucosa, leading to a loss of gastric glandular cells and their eventual replacement by intestinal and fibrous tissues. AG occurs around 50 to 60 percent of U.S. adults older than age 60 and is more in older people than in younger people. : The inflammation is most often the result of a bacterial infection caused by the H. pylori bacterium. The bacteria disrupt the mucus barrier that protects your s...tomach lining from the acidic juices that help with digestion and precursor for vitamin or mineral absorption or utilization. The infection will gradually destroy the cells in your stomach lining if it's not treated and may progress into further health problems. : Complications of untreated or unresponsive Atrophic Gastritis may include the following: Aspiration/ Vomiting Pneumonia and asthma Perforation, stricture, or ulceration of the esophagus Barrett's esophagus Impaired oral or Inadequate energy intake Unexplained weight loss Iron deficiency and anemia Impaired nutrient absorption (prolonged medication use) : Nutrition intervention will address the following for patients with AG: Eliminating the H. pylori infection with the use of antibiotics Improving the patient's overall vitamin C intake. Improving the patient's overall vitamin B12 and folate intake. Decrease or eliminate the use of aspirin and other agents that may aggravate gastritis. Initiating weight loss, if required. Identification of drug-nutrient interaction Lifestyle behaviors that can improve AG include: Exercise at least 30 minutes each day Raise the head of your bed 6 to 9 inches or remain standing up for 3-4 hours after eating a meal. You can put a foam wedge under the top part of the mattress or prop up the legs on the bed's head with wooden blocks. (Stacking pillows is not sufficient.) Wear loose-fitting clothes. Wait 3 hours after eating before lying down. Eat several small meals throughout the day. Discuss the role of fiber in achieving or maintaining bowel integrity. I cannot wait to start making videos and posts on nutritional tips to help others struggling with their health and focus on making the necessary changes for their future health. ... : I firmly believe our culture and traditional food practice is very important to maintain throughout our lifetime and shared with our family and friends. It’s also one of the few ways of expressing our cultural identity. : What are some of the traditional food practices that were passed to you? : One of my past food practice was Portuguese rice pudding!

I know I have been absent for a while on all of my social media, but I want to update everyone about my RDN journey. : I have recently completed my dietetic internship and Masters of Nutrition program this past June 2020 and finalized my research project on the MedDiet with Turlock's Portuguese immigrant population. However, I am still working with my major advisor on submitting a manuscript to research databases for other MedDiet researchers to continue studying the MedDie...t with immigrant populations. My research study is a crucial phase where I will continue to shape and build throughout my RDN career and formulate a nutrition education program for older adult populations. : I will be available on Facebook or Instagram Live Thursday, August 20, at 6:30 pm, for those interested in knowing more about my research results and asking questions on my research project. Please feel free to send me a DM through my profile. I would love to discuss and address any questions or concerns with my friends and followers. Please look forward to the live discussion this Thursday. : Lastly, I have been studying for my RDN exam for the past month and a half for my September test date. If you are a dietetic intern who wants to study together for the RDN exam, please feel free to reach out to me about reviewing opportunities. #nutrition #dietetics #diet #dieteticintern #graduatestudent #dieteticinternship #food #registereddietitian #RDN #malnutrition #futureRDN #MSinNutrition #portugueseimmigration #community #mediterraneandietarypattern #excerise #nutritioneducation #obesity #cardiovasculardisease #sarcopenia #weightmanagement #diabetes #dementia #nutritioneducator #geriatricnutrition #geriatricdietitian #research #geriatricRDN #weightmanagement #mediterraneandiet #joinmeinmyjourneytomymastersdegree

I hope to continue researching the older Portuguese immigrants in the Central Valley and partner with Portuguese organizations to help the Portuguese community. : My next step is to take the RDN exam in September! : Do you know there are approximately 1.33 million Portuguese Americans in the United States? The Portuguese have a long history of migrating to different countries and territories for life or work opportunities. For example, my parents and their families emigrated from Portugal (Azores) to CA's Central Valley for a new life with more work and life opportunities in the 1970s. Most Portuguese families only brought a few items in their bags and the clothes on their backs when...Continue reading

: I want to wish my father (pictured here) a Happy Father's Day! He continues to shape the definition of a real father figure. He continues to support my passion for nutrition as I will begin my transition into an RDN in the Central Valley and research the Mediterranean Diet with the CA's older adult populations. Although I may not express my gratitude and happiness in-person while I am getting older, I want to say that you are a great father and a role model for my life,... my future children, and my future family. I will tell all my children and grandchildren how you genuinely care for the Portuguese community, provide job opportunities for individuals, and donate to many nonpartisan causes. I am thankful for his efforts and contributions to my education and the true definition of a father figure for my future family and business. : I want to wish #HappyFathersDay to all fathers and grandfathers who accepted the challenges of being a father and role model to their children and who supported their dreams of being something in this world. I also want to extend this post to all fathers who have passed, but who have contributed a difference in their family and community. Although I may not understand the feeling of losing a father figure in your life, I hope you can reflect on their life experiences and family dynamic during this difficult time. - - #nutrition #fathersday #dietetics #diet #dieteticintern #graduatestudent #dieteticinternship #food #registereddietitian #RDN #malnutrition #futureRDN #MSinNutrition #businessowner #excerise #nutritioneducation #obesity #cardiovasculardisease #sarcopenia #weightmanagement #diabetes #nutritioneducator #geriatricnutrition #geriatricdietitian #research #geriatricRDN #weightmanagement #mediterraneandiet #joonmeinmyjourneytomymastersdegree

: The year 2020 marks the 155th anniversary of the Juneteenth holiday. Unfortunately, Juneteenth isn't widely taught to kids in schools, community centers, social media, or at home. : For 155 years, the Black community has celebrated Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery and the independence of countless enslaved people that came two-and-a-half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation, which abolished slavery, w...as published by Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, but it took until 1865 for the last enslaved people to be freed. That's because the proclamation only applied to places under Confederate control, but people in Confederate states weren't the only ones who enslaved people of African descent. There were border states and rebel territories that continued to keep enslaved people. Texas, as a result, actually became a hotspot for enslavers who fled their lands with the people they were oppressing. : Please do not give up fighting for the day where we are all treated equally and solving our black community problems! My problems are your problems! Reference: 1. Campbell, Randolph (1984). "The End of Slavery in Texas: A Research Note". Southwestern Historical Quarterly. 88 (1): 7180

Goal: 8:46 #DietitiansforBLM is to honor the life of Mr. George Floyd and the many other Black lives that have been senselessly taken. Mr. Floyd’s life was tra...gically taken on Monday, May 25, 2020 around 8pm CT. After pleading for his life for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, footage shows Mr. Floyd’s lifeless body under the mercy of Officer Chauvin. This caused an eruption, leading to a range of actions, reactions and peaceful protests across the nation and the world. This campaign urges Academy members to take a moment of silence, reflection, meditation, and prayer to honor the life of Mr. Floyd every Monday at 8 pm CT for 8 weeks. Alongside this moment of remembrance, the campaign will also highlight a specific social justice issue each week. Police brutality is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to structural and systemic racism in this country. Others include inequities in our education system, income inequality, affordability and quality of housing, and directly relevant to our field of nutrition and dietetics. disparities in access to affordable and healthy foods and issues of food insecurity. Each Monday will highlight structural and systemic racism that impacts dietetics and nutrition practice and the communities of color that dietitians serve. #academyfordiversity #dietitiansforchange #eatrightPRO
