The end of apartheid in South Africa opened the way toward racial equity in the country, and thanks to the leadership of Mandela, LGBTQ+ people would also see a path toward justice with the constitutional banning of discrimination based on sexual orientation in 1996 and the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2006. . Today we recognize Daisy Gatson Bates (1914- 1999) on a national scale. Bates was a prominent activist in Little Rock, Arkansas where she not only printed a civil rights oriented newspaper, Arkansas State Press, but she personally escorted the Little Rock Nine on their first day of school after the desegregation of schools. Bates’ leadership was well regarded by civil rights activists across the country, including Martin Luther King Jr., who elected ates to be the Women’s D...ay Speaker at Dexter Ave. Baptist Church. Not only this but that same year (1958) Bates was elected to the executive committee of King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). After her newspaper lost revenue and subsequently shut down, Bates moved to New York where she wrote her memoir, The Long Shadow of Little Rock. El día de hoy reconocemos a Daisy Gatson Bates (1914-1999) a nivel nacional. Bates era una activista notable de Little Rock, Arkansas, lugar en donde publicaba un periódico enfocado en los derechos civiles, Arkansas State Press, y donde también acompañó a los Nueve de Little Rock en su primer día de clases después de que se aprobó la desegregación (1957).
