Last year, on my birthday, I set an intention. And then the rest of the year unfolded as a kind of cumulative what-are-you-waiting-for reminder for me, and pretty much everyone I talked to. Why do we shackle ourselves with self-doubt, forcing our creativity into constrained little boxes that we shut away in drawers, waiting for the right time to pull them out? If 2020 taught me anything, it’s that there is never a right time (or every time is the right time, depending on ho...w you look at it). So in December, days before the deadline, I applied to Pacific University’s low-residency MFA fiction program and was admitted. (Then I got really scared.) But the program is incredible all virtual, with brilliant instructors and a design-your-own schedule that allows me to write on weekends and after hours, so I can still maintain my career. When I graduate in Spring 2022, it will be 30 years from the month of my college graduation, when decided to pursue a more practical MA in journalism, rather than following my (terrified) heart into creative writing. This feels like the right time to run my fingers down the walls. #mfa #fiction #novels #writer #amwriting #amreading Photo by Hugues de BUYER-MIMEURE on Unsplash

Every year, the U.S. gives the fossil fuel industry $20 billion in tax break in 2018 alone, this industry made $28 billion in profits. To put this in perspective: The U.S. spent 10x more on subsidies than education in 2015. Join me in urging your Representative to top using my tax dollars to support fossil fuel production! https://buff.ly/3cxz87y #activist #activism #equity #climateequity #climate #climatechange #climatecrisis #climateemergency #climatejustice #keepitintheground #greennewdeal #actonclimate #renewableenergy #environment #sustainable #buildbackbetter #letsdothis

Time for a change. After flirting with the idea of going back to bangs, I made a private deal with myself that when Biden won the election, I would go for it. Today I felt confident enough in the numbers to pull the trigger. We’re not at the finish line yet, but it is in sight, and I am grateful for the incredible turnout on both sides, and for the transparency given to the process of counting votes. Thanks to the amazing @vivianesellam @marinabeachhair for a totally masked and well ventilated haircut. Onward! #bangs #fringebangs #fringe #haircut #finally #biden #harris #yesplease

Victory! Coalition of activist organizations including Earth Justice, Center for Biological Diversity, RISE St. James, Louisiana Bucket Brigade and Healthy Gulf forces U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to suspend permits for Formosa Plastics proposed petrochemical plant in Louisiana, which would have emitted 800 tons of toxic air pollution annually and contribute to plastic pollution. https://buff.ly/354ppS1 #activist #activism #plastic #endplasticpollution #breakfreefromplastic #plastickills #refillthegood #thefutureisrefillable #circulareconomy #refillution #plasticpollutes #plasticisoil #plasticisclimatechange #plasticisfracking #plasticfree #reuse #repair #refill #closedloop #zerowaste #trashfree #environment #sustainable #letsdothis

Yes, this: We pick our leaders - our leaders don’t pick their voters. In the midst of a pandemic that’s left millions of us grieving our loved ones and wondering how we’ll make ends meet, we turned out in record numbers across race and place to cast our votes for new leadership. Local election officials have been hard at work counting our votes, which we trust will confirm the will of the people and let us move forward together. #TogetherWeVote #CountEveryVote #EveryVoteCounts @AdvancementProject @apiahf @Demos_Org @naacp @ncai1944 @WeAreUnidosUS @NatUrbanleague @FIAnational @RaceForward

There’s no amount of lead that’s safe for children and this new study shows the danger is more prevalent than we thought, and disproportionately affecting Black communities. What’s the solution? Systems change and in the meantime: Filter, rinse your aerator (faucet screen), and flush water lines for 45 seconds before using for drinking, cooking, or baby formula. https://buff.ly/34dNZ2k #activist #activism #health #wellness #sustainable #sustainability #food #eating #farms #farming #healthyeating #healthyfood #plantbased #vegetarian #eco #organic

Yes, this: Using plastic [in any form] is a fool’s errand. It’s never going to get us where we need to be, and there’s always going to be a net-positive carbon impact. But the opposite can be true for natural materials. https://buff.ly/3owwiTV #activist #activism #ecofriendly #sustainable #sustainability #environment #sustainableliving #circulareconomy #closedloop #design #repair #reuse #fashion #sustainablefashion #ecofashion #ethicalfashion #slowfashion #fairtrade #letsdothis
