Yesterday I was able to mount this digital camera on this Nikon Diaphot that was around before there were digital cameras. Normally it would mount on a side port but years ago someone removed that mount and put an aluminum cover plate in its place. There is no way I could find that cover so I mounted the camera in the front and it is parfocal.

This Nikon Diaphot needed to be put back in service. Anything that was supposed to move was stuck. I completely disassembled the microscope so I could clean and lubricate it. I reassembled the microscope and while I was doing what I thought was the final set-up, the main focus gear broke. So the microscope had to be disassembled again but farther. I was able to repair the gear because it isn't something I can buy. I reassembled everything again then while checking it out, the light bulb burned out again so I replaced the bulb with an LED. When the customer first looked through the eyepieces she was thrilled. I was too.

Yesterday I did a major overhaul of this Nikon TE2000-S. The initial problem was that the main focus was not smooth. The bearings in the objective turret had became bound up. I had to reset the bearing races. But because everything had been so bound up I needed to look at the reduction gear system in the base of the microscope to make sure there were no broken gears. There fortunately weren't any.

I do a lot of repairs that are not bench top microscopes. This is a small surgical microscope. A customer called and said that one of the wheels keeps falling o...ut. The threads of the stem were fine but needed to be cleaned up. I ordered a thread repair kit for the base. Drill out the old threads, tap larger threads into the hole. Use the insert tool to install the heli-coil. Screw in the wheel. Done. See more

Yesterday's fun, a total overhaul of a Nikon Optiphot 66. This microscope was originally built for the silicone wafer industry. But as most of the chip Technology has gone to 12 inch wafers these microscopes have become fairly inexpensive. This is a bright field model only.

I have not seen one of these for a very long time. Unitron Series N Metallograph. I used to see them all the time in the 1980s at every circuit board shop in Southern California. But those shops have been gone for years.

Today I brought this old Leitz Diaplan back to life. It had been put aside a number of years ago. But the lab has a new project and wanted to know if I could fix it. The power supply for the transmitted light smoked when turned on 2 weeks ago. I replaced that light source with an LED system from Retro Diode For the fluorescence system the customer had a halide light source and an adapter for a Nikon. So I adapted the adapter to work on the Leitz. This us a nice modern system now that would cost about $25 K if they bought an equivalent new microscope.

While at UCSD I had to get into this Nikon Eclipse Ti. The turret that changes the light path to the cameras was sticky and noisy. So I had to get to the bottom of it.

Today I went completely through this Nikon Eclipse E800 microscope that had been sitting unused for a number of years. When I was finished everything worked like new.

Yesterday I was at UC San Diego resurrecting these two microscopes that have been unused for years. The Nikon Eclipse TE 300 had a burned out power supply for the bright field illuminator so I installed an LED light source.

Yesterday I went to Cal Tech to replace the drive belt in this Olympus SZX12 stereo microscope. It had just worn out over the years.

Today I went to Cal Tech to clean up some spilled materials inside this microscope. While it was taken apart I performed a full service. Everything worked great afterward.
