Are you too nice to be taken seriously? Too serious to be relatable? These traits that don't matter to individual contributors suddenly get important for senior managers and above (Keyword 'gravitas') . And virtually nobody will tell you how you're doing! Based on client work in the last 9 months, I'd say many women are often so friendly, casual, and accommodating that they blunt their leadership chances. Men can also be too nice; Over smiling is a big one. But more often m...en are overly focused on delivering facts, options, and strategies which makes them seem robotic or detached. There is an executive presence behavior "envelope" that bounds the upper level leader. Stepping outside the envelope weakens authority and power. Michael Dukakis couldn't win the US Presidency after he was photographed with a big grin while riding a tank. Candidate John Kerry looked over-serious and was accused of "looking French"! So be aware: your envelope matters. Are you too nice or too serious? Check in with colleagues and get a reading. You're probably completely blind to your own presence! Want group feedback?
