Understanding Prostatitis Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate. The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system and about the size of a walnut. The prostate gland sits below a man's bladder and surrounds the urethra, which is the tube that carries urine from a man's bladder out of his body. There are two main forms of prostatitis: bacterial and nonbacterial. Bacterial prostatitis is caused by an infection in the prostate. Antibiotics are the main course of t...reatment. Nonbacterial prostatitis has no signs of bacteria in the urine when tests are run. While the cause is often unknown, nonbacterial prostatitis may be linked to stress, nerve damage, injuries or prior urinary tract infections. General signs of prostatitis may include painful or frequent urination, lower back pain, pain in the bladder and painful ejaculations. If you have any of these, see a health care provider who will do an exam and take a urine sample. Men with prostatitis should drink plenty of water and stay away from drinks such as coffee and alcohol which could make urinary symptoms worse. For pain management, medications like ibuprofen and hot baths may help. source: Urology Care Foundation

What causes kidney stones? The kidneys regulate levels of fluid, minerals, salts, and other substances in the body. When the balance of these compounds changes, kidney stones may form. There are four types of kidney stones, each made of different substances. Uric acid and cystine are two compounds that may comprise kidney stones. Factors known to increase the risk of kidney stones include dehydration, family history, genetics, and the presence of certain medical conditions. Having one or more family members with a history of kidney stones increases the risk of the condition. source: On Health

When a man reaches about age 25, his prostate begins to grow. This natural growth is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and it is the most common cause of prostate enlargement. BPH is a benign condition that does not lead to prostate cancer, though the two problems can coexist. Although 50% to 60% of men with BPH may never develop any symptoms, others find that BPH can make life miserable. The symptoms of BPH include: - a hesitant, interrupted, weak urine stream... - urgency, leaking, or dribbling - a sense of incomplete emptying - more frequent urination, especially at night. As a result, many men seek treatment. The good news is that treatments are constantly being improved. Patients and their physicians now have more medications to choose from, so if one doesn't do the trick, another can be prescribed. And thanks to some refinements, surgical treatments are more effective and have fewer side effects than ever before. source: healthharvard.edu
