Once in a while a patient of mine keeps sharing his/her enjoyment of the smile makeoever he/she received. And, if you look at the specific comments, they compliment someone's smile, not his/her veneers. It is all about looking natural

Some like it white ! Some patients, who have had naturally dark/yellow or stained teeth during their entire lives, just want the brightest opposite. They have made up their minds far before they meet with me. "White yet natural" is their motto, and they look for someone who in their opinion would achieve that goal. Lucky me that they have found me. And apparently lucky for them, because they usually leave very happy with their new smiles.... Here is an example of one of the more drastic makeovers towards a brighter smile. The patient had his goal set. We talked for hours, I helped him visualize with images, and he tested with temporaries. His choice remained to have that "stellar" smile. So, he got what he was looking for and left the office a happy man...

While a healthy smile is appraised as attractive, it is the result of functional principles. I highlighted in several posts the impact of oral and masticatory functional patterns on aging smiles and their rehabilitations. Porcelain veneers and direct bonding are the least invasive ways to enhance the attractiveness of teeth that have been around for some time. However, we need to look at the causes of those dull, dingy, and even worn looks of older smiles. ... As we use our bodies throughout life, we adopt certain motor patterns, which contributes to our physiognomy. These patterns are not necessarily optimum for the particular blueprint that we inherited. Hence, we see conditions such as poor posture, osteoarthritis, hamstring injuries, temporomandibular joint disorders, and many other "age-related" ailments you might think about right now. Life is about balance, which includes how we use our bodies. Worn teeth are an indicator about the way we use our genetically predetermined masticatory system. Over the years, habits become hard wired into our central nervous system, and often cannot be untrained anymore. Nevertheless, they need to be understood to help the body "accept" the rejuvenation of a smile. Every smile design is limited by the functional space that is drawn by the patients' individual neuromuscular movement patterns with the dental contours of mandibular teeth. This functional space should not be interfered with when restroring teeth. Orthodontists are familiar with the term "constricted EOF" which often leads to typical wear patterns and neuromu...scular problems such as headaches and tight muscles. Patients need to be able to move their lower teeth freely against the upper ones. Even one dental restoration at a single tooth that interfers with the EOF might trigger occlusal trauma as well as muscular hyperactivity and tension. The best way to avoid any interferences with habitual neuromuscular patterns is the close monitoring of a new smile design with temporary restorations.
