The Political Science Department is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Wally Miles, professor emeritus of political science, passed away on July 8, 2020. Professor Miles’s career at SDSU spanned thirty-two yearsfrom 1966, when he was the only Black professor in the university, until his retirement in 1998. Born in 1934 and raised in Texas, he received his bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University before serving in the U.S. military in Korea. After his servic...e, he enrolled in Indiana University where he earned his Ph.D. in political science in 1962. Professor Miles’s enduring legacy at SDSU in the Department of Political Science includes the Public Law program that he helped build, most especially the courses in Law and the Political System and the Supreme Court and Contemporary Issues that he developed and taught regularly, and that remain popular with students to this day. It also includes his term as department chair from 1995-1998 which, as an institution builder, he used to secure the future of a department that at the time was facing a large number of retirements. At SDSU, Professor Miles’s colleagues remember him with great respect and affection as a mentor of junior faculty, a trusted advisor, a power in the department and the university, a charming and gracious man, and a dedicated teacher and scholar. Beyond SDSU, Professor Miles served the profession and the broader community. He was elected to the board of the American Political Science Association and served as chairman of the Commission on the Status of Blacks in that association. He also served as associate editor of the Western Political Science Quarterly. A tireless advocate for civil rights, he served the broader community in a number of capacities, most notably as chairman of the San Diego chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and as a member of its national board, as well as chairman of the board of the San Diego Urban League. Professor Miles is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Frances Miles; two sons, Christopher Miles (Donna) and Tony Miles (Maisha); a grandson, Brayden Miles; two sisters, Iola Taylor and Ella Lindsey (Larry); a brother, Edgar A. Miles (Ann); and numerous nieces and nephews. Donations in Professor Miles’s memory will go toward a student award to be established in his name. To contribute, you can make a check payable to the Campanile Foundation (with C00855 in the memo line), and indicate that the donation is a tribute in the memory of Dr. Miles. Checks should be mailed to: The Campanile Foundation, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92182-1968. Alternatively, a donation can be made online by going to make a gift online, click on "this gift is a tribute" and enter that the donation is in memory of Dr. Miles in the C00855 Fund. -Farid Abdel-Nour, Professor & Department Chair https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com//walter-miles-politic
