This weeks survivor story is written by @pixielaneerin Nine years ago, at the age of 28, my middle sister Randi, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. After her diagnosis, she tested positive for the BRCA1 gene and had a double mastectomy. My dad’s mother had passed away from Ovarian Cancer when he was 22. Before my sister’s diagnosis, my dad had already had an appointment scheduled for the following month to get tested for the BRCA gene. If one parent has the gene, there is ...a 50 percent chance it will get passed on to your child. So, now it was time for me and my little sister to get tested. My little sister also tested positive for the BRCA gene and underwent a preventative double mastectomy. I was the only sister who did not have the gene. After Randi recovered from her surgery, she and her husband began the IVF process. This way, they could test their embryos and ensure they wouldn’t pass the BRCA gene on to their future children. Almost exactly one year after her diagnosis, my sister had a recurrence. The doctors think that this was caused from all the hormones in her body from the egg retrieval during the IVF process. She had another surgery, went through 6 weeks of radiation and started a new medication. After this, the doctors told my sister it would be in her best interest not to carry a baby. It was at this time that I said I would carry her baby for her when I was done having my own kids. I didn’t have kids yet, but in order to be a gestational surrogate you have to have already carried a child. My sister ended up using a gestational surrogate and had a healthy baby girl 4.5 months after my first daughter was born. I wasn’t planning on having kids so close together, but ended up having another baby girl 18 months later. The surrogate she used was amazing, but unfortunately, she got preeclampsia at the end of her pregnancy with my niece. It was in everyone’s best interest that she didn’t become pregnant again. I decided to start the process of carrying Randi’s second baby after my second daughter turned one. I wanted to do it sooner rather than later. A little over a year later, after 2 implantations, difficult pregnancy my niece was born!
