Pismo Beach Pier 05.11.2020

An ongoing album that began 3/14/17 with the Ground Breaking (Nail Pounding :)) Ceremony. I'll be posting updates & photos of progress on a regular basis. If yo...u'd like to see the early photos, click 'Historic Pismo Beach Pier Restoration' above and you'll be taken to the beginning of the album. Enjoy and I welcome your comments. July 11th - Making Progress! The fireworks went off on the pier without a hitch and now we are moving past the first diamond into the straight away headed for diamond two! Lots of new pylons are now in place and they are now at the water line. June 29th - Full steam ahead! The new railings are almost complete on the first diamond and it looks like they are going to make the goal of the first diamond being open by the 4th of July! June 15th - We now have some major renovations happening this week. The first of the wood pylons have been removed and replaced with new metal pylons. The wood pylons that are closest to the boardwalk will remain but from about the end of the first diamond to the end of the pier will be replaced with new metal pylons. Hopefully through the years they will begin to get some character as they age. I for one will miss the old wood ones. This also marks my first sunset photo through new pylons! June 6th - How many birds can you fit on the Pier? Birds have always been nesting underneath the Pismo Beach Pier and you would always see a few Pelicans, Seagulls and Pigeons sitting on the posts or waiting for a tidbit from someone fishing off the pier, however, now that the pier is under construction and the end portion empty, the birds have come by the hundreds sitting on what they must now think is their pier! May 30th - An American Flag waved proudly high over the pier from the construction crane on the Memorial Day holiday weekend and this weeks lots of sand was being moved around to make access for pedestrians under the pier at the back towards the boardwalk. May 24th - The restoration seems to be going more rapidly now that the entire first diamond is being rebuilt. The orange safety fence now reaches well under the pier to the ocean but you can still cross under the pier at the back. May 18th - Steady as she goes. A lot of progress on the first diamond. May 9th - Significant work has been done over the past week. Most of the first diamond has now been removed and unless the tide is extremely low you can no longer walk under the pier at the tide line, however a detour has been set up and you can now walk under the pier up at the wall. May 2nd - Slow but steady work as they pull apart and begin work on the south side of the 1st diamond. Heavy wind makes the work a bit more difficult. Check out the short video! April 26th update - Top, Bottom, Sides, Underneath and Work Yard! A lot of progress has been made over the past week. The crew is now working into the middle portion of the first diamond. The orange safety fence under the pier has been moved substantially and at high tide you can no longer walk back and forth under the pier and must go around. Posted today are images from the past several days. April 20th - Out with the Old! There are some wonderful treasures to be found at the Corporate Yard where you can purchase the planks being removed from the pier. April 19th - Bits and Pieces. Today some photos taken on the 19th and the 20th. They have made their way into the first diamond now and are moving along. April 14th - Some close ups of the new materials being used. And a request for the sign, thought I had posted that, sorry! Thank you for your emails everyone!! April 9th - Moving along slowly. Some steel and wood beams placed almost to the first diamond now. April 5th Dawn and Dusk - Men at Work! A big section of planks taken out yesterday. April 4th - I've got the blues...... April 3rd - Inch by inch the work continues up into the first diamond. Also had some fun this weekend playing around with some long exposures under the pier. :) March 28th - And the work progresses. My favorite and maybe one of the most historic parts of the pier other than the old wood beams and pilings is the compass. Farewell.... I'll be posting regular progress photos in this album as the pier goes through its restoration and we countdown to the re-grand opening! March 15th - A sad evening last night, taking a final stroll to the end of the beautiful Pismo Beach Pier to watch the sun set into the west. With exception of some major events like the 4th of July the pier will be closed for what could be 24 to 30 months. So much history in those old wooden planks, so many memorable nights walking on and around her photographing sunsets through the gnarly pilings and scarred railings. The original section of the pier dating to 1924 will be replaced while other sections will also undergo renovations. And although she will never be the same, she will come back again, safer and stronger. The pier always brings people together. I met so many nice folks last night (and at today's ceremony) and heard a lot of fun stories. This afternoon was the Groundbreaking (actually Nail Pounding) Ceremony. I'll post photos later on. For all of you I photographed, I hope to have all the images posted soon. Post a comment and I'll let you know when they're posted. This evening the pier sits in a blanket of fog, her final farewell.... but it was still a perfect evening to go out and Visit Pismo Beach!
